What's the safest way to drive with a dog?
I have these nightmares of us getting into an accident and my dog shooting through the front windshield.
Right now we have a hatchback, so he just sits in the trunk and pops his head up every now and then. We are eventually going to get an SUV or a minivan ( ) but I was wondering how everyone travels with their dog. TIA

I have a carseat and get made fun of all the time! It wraps around the seat and then you hook the collar onto it

We have the same thing, you can get it at Petco. I strongly urge everyone to buckle up their pets!!! We have a friend who lost a pet in an accident because she wasn't buckled in.

My dogs have carseats. They do attach to the seat, BUT if in an accident of strong force, it would not keep them safe. Small accident, maybe, but it's better than nothing.

I have tried to harness my dogs but it neve worked. One needs to lay on the floor but will get up to get fresh air from the window we keep cracked open. I will need to figure something out for our next trip.

We have a hammock and Cosmo is very comfortable in it. We drove to Florida and back with him in it.

Re: What's the safest way to drive with a dog?
A crate, kennel, whatever you want to call it. Hands down, I think it is the safest. I had a trainer show me how to knot my least and hang it out the car door so my dog couldn't get into the front seat. After a while it dawned on me that I could end up hanging my dog or snapping his neck. It's been a crate ever since and with every dog after that.
ETA: Added bonus of crate is there is absolutely NO DAMAGE to my car/truck. My dogs are all trained (ask me how) and I don't have to worry about opening the crate door, but with a crate, there is way less of a chance of them bolting than just opening a car/truck/hatch back door.

Re: What's the safest way to drive with a dog?
I have a carrier that is meant for the car but also has a strap on it if you want to carry it somewhere. It is dome shaped, and my 12 lb dog has plenty of room. The seatbelt straps into loops on the back of it to hold it in place. I can see how a small dog could easily snap his neck if they are in a harness attached to a seatbelt so I never went this route.
