Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

DD is 6 1/2 and has never worn a bikini...its all about sun exposure to me...at that age she was in a rash guard long sleeved top, bottoms and a hat...now she is refusing the rashguard most days and just wears a one piece...most of her friends wear bikinis or tankinis so maybe next year I will get her a tankini.

Just a note even with sunscreen on kids skin gets damaged - DD has white marks on her back from where her swimsuit hits...she always wears sunscreen..we avoid the sun during 12 and 4 and still her skin has changed color...never burned but still a color change.

In a baby that young I would use a rash guard for trips to the beach etc and maybe the bikini for quick dips in the pool...just to save her baby skin.

Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

My DD didn't start wearing a bikini until she was around 4ish. She started asking for them when we saw them in the store, so I bought them. We have tons of really cute ruffly ones, and also a lot of cute ruffly one pieces as well, and a few tankinis. I do hate the fact that I have to apply more sunblock to her skin in the bikini. The two piece makes going to the bathroom easier. It's tricky to wrangle a wet bathing suit up and down.

There are a few reasons I'm not a fan of bikinis on little ones:

1) There's just not enough skin protection. You're exposing way too much of their skin to the sun.

2) In general, I see bikinis as "sexy" and don't think little girls should be sexualized in any way.

As for the ease of changing diapers, you can easily get a 2-piece bathing suit (tankini) that doesn't expose your daughter in the same way.

ITA. Sun protection is the main factor for me. DD is 6 now and has always worn and still wears a 2 piece bathing suit, where the top is a rash guard, like Julz posted above.

I agree. My DD is very fair. She wears a rash guard and bottoms like the one above. I have a few one piece suits but I prefer 2 for diaper changes.

If she starts asking for a bikini I'll consider it, but until then I would rather not.

DD will get her first bikini when I did, when I could buy one for myself. I was about 16 I think.

Bikinis are for adults.

DD does have two piece bathing suits that don't show her stomach or maybe an inch of her stomach.

DD wearing bikini - question?

we have like 4 bikinis that are all teeny tiny but cute and ruffly at the same time. and she looks absolutely adorable in them. it wouldnt even for one second cross my mind that anyone would look at it as sexy and not adorable. that just is not where my mind goes but i guess there are lots of sickos out there. i love bikinis for their ease of changing and honestly its been SO hot out i cant imagine her wearing a rashguard i feel like she'd sweat in it. we never really stay out more than an hour or two and she gets SLATHERED in sunscreen. we've been out like dozens of times this summer and she doesn't even have a tan line cause thats how many times i slather and reapply sunscreen.

all of that being said, we also have about 4 one pieces.

Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

DD # 1 wears bikinis -- so much easier for a newly potty trained kid! I put a ton of sunscreen on her, so I don't worry so much about the sun exposure. As for the baby, I am not really a fan of a bikini with a swim diaper hanging out of it bc it looks stupid, so she usually wears a one piece. I found the greatest thing on zulily for her and am kicking myself for not buying more than one -- a suit with a crotch that snaps like a onesie! SO easy to change her!

I personally wouldn't care about putting my DD in a bikini, other then the extra sun exposure and my hubby. My husband refuses to let my daughter wear a bikini. I think it's adorable and cute.

Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

DD wears both one piece and two.

I don't think it's skimpy or inappropriate...I understand people having a preference, but I can't see why people would make a big deal.

I don't like the skimpy ones...... but I see no problem with a regular one, and I think the tankinis are great.

At our village pool I would say 90% of the young girls are in bikinis or tankinis. We see very few one pieces.

I guess it's a good thing we didn't join the pool this year, poor DD would be in the 10%!

(I think she's too young for the new "kiddie" pool area so we decided it wasn't worth it this year)

Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

We put DD in a bikini....they are cute and tasteful. We got them at Target. Its so much easier than a one piece when she needs a diaper change.

Be glad you didn't join. It is a horror- very hard to watch your child because you can't see around it, so if they go up and come down the far slide you can't see them. Now it is full of older kids and there is not much for the younger ones. IMHO the 5-12 yr olds had the big pool and slides they didn't have to take away the only thing the littles ones had. The little ones don't like the water dumping on their heads or the overpowerful sprayers. Not a big fan. Lots of parents complaining. Only to be told under 5 don't belong on it - they can have the tiny baby pool (that dumps water) or the surrounding areas where tge big kids spray the water cannons etc. They even have water dumping over the baby pool. The staff on the thing wears a raincoat! Although DD#1likes it DD#2 hates it. Too much water, not enough supervision. Too many rough older kids (think unsupervised older boys). A lot of our friends did not join this year. Nothing wrong with the 10% we have a few 1 pieces but the girls say rhey are hard to get out of wet when they are trying to go potty. I am surprised not more rash guards. I know one mom who only uses them - but does so b/c she says where she is from kids have
to wear them. Miss the old set up. The one big thing they did right was to put tents over the big and little kid playgrounds which are now next to each other. They need them over the swings too. BTW now if you don't get there at opening good luck getting an umbrella table. They took out the covered stucture and only have umbrella tables and uncovered backless benches. So no rwal covered seating and shade. Also now with the big kids over on the kiddie side more competition for tables.

I bought DD a cute bikini this year, but I haven't used it yet. She's just so fair, I like her to have a little more coverage. But in general, I don't have a problem with most of them. I don't like baby bikinis that look like grownup/sexy bikinis. But cute, little girl two-pieces are fine.

I don't see any problem with a young girl in a bikini. A tasteful bikini. That is the difference I think. If everything is covered up properly, it looks cute. A g-string bikini or triangle top bikini, uh, no.

I agree!!! Personally I think bikinis are so cute on baby girls. My DD has a two piece (I couldn't wait to buy one!!!!). I think as long as it's tasteful what's the big deal?!? I do agree about the sun exposure though and will be using plenty of sunscreen.

I dont see it as a big deal either, however I do prefer the rash guards with bottoms and a hat to limit exposure to the sun.

Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

I agree with most of the above posters that we do more suit b/c of sun protection. My DD wears long sleeve rash guards most of the time for that reason.

Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

I personally dont do bikinis on DD. not a fan on little girls but it is my own preference. not going to judge anyone else if they prefer binkinis for their DD. DD is also very fair so we do rash guards as well as one piece suits.
