How long did it take to find the right ADHD med?
We started this process in February, and while the first med, Vyvanse had great results in school, the side effects when they were coming off the meds were intolerable. We went to a new Dr and she switched the meds. There have been no results with the new meds, and we have increased the meds 3 times. There are no positive results and no side effects.
Is this the norm? How long does it take to find the right dose?

How long did it take to find the right ADHD med?
ADD issue here. It was the first meds we got. It took about a week to adjust to them. The side effects (staying up late, not tired & not eating) were tough to deal with. It was a heartbreaking but necessary choice we made but it didn't make it easier.

Mine are just ADD too. Not tired or not hungry we can deal with, but they were like demon children from 5:30 to 7:00 3 days a week and they only took the meds 5 days a week. You never knew what mood they would be in and how they would react to saying no. In order to not have any flip outs we had to basically just let them do what they wanted but I was certainly not comfortable with that.
One of my sons was a lunatic because I would not let him wear crocs to baseball practice. Screaming, stomping, running out the front door. I had never seen him so mad. Then at 7 he was back to himself.
The other cried for 2 hours after his luigi stepped on mario's head in super mario brothers.
Just so frustrating that for school the second dose of the first med worked great, and their report card went up. Then we switched and their report card went back down. I really don't want to waste another school year trying to regulate the meds since I felt like we wasted so much of last year waiting and then different dosages.

Actually now that you said it, I do remember the angry & emotional part. But
it didn't last long - maybe a week or two.
It was Adderall - which we're still using.

This went on for 3 months, we kept waiting to see if it would go away and it never did.

For my DD, it took a few months. The third drug, Adderall XR is what she has been on for over a year. She has ADHD.
She was briefly on Focalin, and that drug made her very angry.
She does well on the Adderall XR.

How long did it take to find the right ADHD med?
It took two tries to get it right. With the first med he cried every day when he got home from school and was just very down as the med wore off. He has been on minimal dose of focalin during the school year and it worked well. We take him off it for the summer with the hope that his appitite will increase.
