Gardening people - Knock Out Roses

I bought a double pink Knock Out rose bush from Lowes a few weeks ago. Its the smallest one they sell($15 and about 12" tall). I bought it because it had a lot of flowers and buds and a shoot of new growth. Now all but 2 of the buds have bloomed and died. There is no new growth or new buds. I know you dont have to dead head these but I did anyway to possibly promote new branches. These roses are supposed to grow ALOT but I have yet to see that. Any tips? TIA

Re: Gardening people - Knock Out Roses

I'm interested in seeing the responses. I have a row of seven knock out roses in front of my house and everything was great for a few weeks, but then the blooms stopped coming...I deadheaded them despite knowing I didn't have to, mostly because they looked awful but I thought it would help. Now four of them have just a few blooms and the other ones still have nada. Let me know if you find any info!

We have them too in front of our house. The same thing happened to us, they looked great and then died. My husband went to Lowe's and they told him that there is a particular bug that kills them and sold him some stuff that looked like little pellets. He put a scoop at the base of each plant and now its 2 weeks later and they look great again. I can ask him the name of it!

If you cut the buds off they will multiple. Just the bud though. As the years go on you will get more than more roses.

Re: Gardening people - Knock Out Roses

So the first year isnt the year people RAVE about the tremdous growth and all season blooming?

I have googled almost all the websites out there but no one specifically talks about the first year with a tiny little plant. It looks decently healthy but just no new growth or buds.

I saw on a youtube video that you dead head right above the first set of leaves that have 5 leaves.

Any suggested fertilizer?

People absolutely love these carefree roses and you see them growing like crazy at like gas stations where I'm sure no one is caring for them and they look amazing! I wanted the same thing!

Thanks for the help!

I don't have any answers but you're describing exactly what happened to our Carpet Roses. Right now we have maybe 10 flowers between 5 plants after 2 months with nothing. I'm hoping they are happier next year but now I'm wondering if the same bugs are eating our roses.

Re: Gardening people - Knock Out Roses

I wanted to update everyone. I think I mentioned that I dead-headed the roses and about a week later, I have tons of new sprouts! No buds yet but on every branch that I snipped the dead, wilted flower, there is at least 1 new set of leaves. I wonder if this would have happened whether I did it or not but I'm happy that the rose bush isnt dying. Chat Icon
