I feel like I'm obsessed with what I eat

I have been using My Fitness Pal to lose weight and I am down almost 22 lbs in 3.5 months. I have about 6 lbs to go.

I feel like my day revolves around what I eat and what I am going to eat. I meal plan in advance but that's not even the issue - I count the minutes till lunch, I hoard calories for a drink with dinner, I debate with myself all day whether I should have 2 servings of dinner or save the calories for dessert. I literally obsess over it all day. If I have a cheat day (out with DH for example) I stress hardcore over what the scale will say afterwards.

I could talk about it all day long, too - what I ate, what I'm going to eat, how much I lost, but the only person around to listen is DH Chat Icon

Obviously I am doing something right. I feel great and I like what I see in the mirror. I just don't know how to let go of this obsession. I'm worried it will lead to me over-doing it once I reach goal and have more calories to work with during the day - and I'm scared I will never be able to eat without tracking my calories again.

Anyone else feel this way?

I wish I could be that focused....I've lost 30 pounds over the last 2 years....but it's so slow and I keep losing my focus....getting distracted by chocolate and french fries!

I feel like I could drop the rest of the weight easily if I could just be that focused!

Re: I feel like I'm obsessed with what I eat

I am just like that. I've lost nearly 40 lbs, just got over my plateau and every second of every day is consumed with calorie counting. I feel OCD, I eat breakfast by 11, snack by 3, if I'm 5 minutes over I worry the scale won't budge etc. etc. I think maybe the issue for both of us is being SO close to goal that it feels like every second of every day counts, and you just want to get there already, kwim?

I'll be honest, it took me a LONG time to get here. I always told myself that I didn't care if I was overweight, it was too important for me to enjoy my food and alcohol. After I saw a picture of myself at my birthday i was so embarrassed that I allowed myself to get that out of control. It just clicked for me, and now I don't think I can ever go back to where I was.

Yes! That's exactly it!! I am soooo close and I just want to be there already, I'm afraid that any little slip will push me back a week or two and I obsess over it to the point where I will choose a food that is 1 oz and 100 calories over a food that is 6 oz and 100 calories just because I know I'll see less of a difference on the scale the next day.

Chat Icon You got it!

Um, I don't exercise at all Chat Icon I know it's bad but I am just SO lazy. I do go walking sometimes and I chase after my kids all day, but that's it - I can't be bothered. Counting calories is a PITA at first but with the app I use it makes it easier and you really get into a routine.

Can you use some of your obsession to obsess me into being obsessed?

I have been using the app for 2 weeks and trying very hard to keep on top of it, but it's so much easier just to eat then it is to calorie count.

I was down 3 lbs the first week and it felt so good to see a lower number on the scale. This week the scale didn't budge....my own fault.

I admire your dedication!

Re: I feel like I'm obsessed with what I eat

I was JUST like that. I hit my goal (down 30 lbs) and was still obsessing over everything. My bff called my DH to discuss it - she thought I had a problem. Since that convo I have tried to ease up a bit (actually, I just had pizza for the first time in about six months), and am slowly allowing myself to be a bit more lenient. I still eat crazy healthy probably 97% of the time, but I needed to ease up for my own mental health and for those close to me so they wouldn't worry. For me, though, I love cardio, so I try to balance it by working out really hard 4-5 days a week. I totally understand, and it was really almost as much of a process to become comfortable indulging a bit as it was learning to eat healthy! For me, it was my DH telling me "you look perfect FOR ME the way you are, you don't need to change your body at all, you look amazing, and I'm the only one besides you who you need to look good for". (I realize that doesn't sound as supportive as it was) but basically he gave me permission to ease up a bit, and it worked!

Re: I feel like I'm obsessed with what I eat

My DH's aunt is a personal trainer and recommended this app.... I used it for one day. ONE .. and I just couldn't bring myself to continue with it for that very reason. I know for me personally, using an app like that would just lead to an unhealthy lifestyle...... but keeping track of what you eat is really such a good idea and a great way to keep your diet in tact! Actually, when I entered in the foods I ate for the day, I left out the cookie and random pretzels I snacked on because I felt too guilty entering them in!! Chat Icon Chat Icon See, an app like that wouldn't work for people like me.. I'd lie by omission Chat Icon Anyway, sorry that didn't answer your question but congrats on the weight loss!! that's awesome!!!!!!

I feel like I'm obsessed with what I eat

I have had problems with this in the past. Once when I was really young. It bordered on anorexia. Then, in college, I had the obsessive problem again- with diet and exercise. That time, it wasn't anorexia, because my goal wasn't to be thing (though it was the result), but to be healthy. I was a freak, though. I was the annoying person at every meal. I wouldn;t go to certain places because there was nothing i could eat. or i would go, and not eat. i made a separate meal for myself at home. I wouldn't have a single bite of food after 6:30. When we went for mexican, I remember packing up my small bag of "baked" chips, so I wouldn't eat the ones on the table. If I ate extra, I exercised extra. One time I accidentally had a regular glass of root beer instead of diet. I totally freaked--like crying and freaking and refused to have the glass of wine i had planned on having that night at a concert we were going to. Once on vacation i ordered chicken, and could feel the oil in the chicken and felt gross and it was all i could talk about. i refused to go back to the room and insisted on walking on the beach extra to burn off the oil in the one or two bites of the chicken that i ate. so, though i was physically healthy, mentally, i was not. i did look damn good though. as an adult, i am in a better place mentally. i'm not fat, but i still don't like how i look. i want to be thinner, but i don't want to be that person any more either. i definitely don't want my daughters seeing me obsess over food, calories and weight and being thin. it's a very hard balance and something i struggle with constantly. i dont' have any answers, though.

I think it's definitely something to be careful about. I know someone who was like this for months and months. The person wound up becoming obsessed and having a serious eating problem, lost way, way, way more weight than was ever needed/than was healthy, and now can't put it back on at all despite returning to regular eating habits.

Re: I feel like I'm obsessed with what I eat

I completely obsess over what I eat now. After my second son was born in...ummm...*cough cough*...2009...the weight has just stuck to me like glue and all of my usual tricks of exercising more to drop pounds haven't worked. So I'm off grains, sugar, white flour, processed foods, etc. I'm seeing a difference already, both in my clothes and on the scale, but I literally think about food more than ever. I'm always reading labels. I'll eat mostly salads, lead protein and veggies during the day just to have a peanut butter cup at night (not every night). I thought I was a bit crazy so it makes me feel better to read there are others who are doing exactly what I do every day. Chat Icon

My fitness pal is the best app ever, but I do think it makes you a little nuts sometimes. I used it's (before I became pregnant) and I was obsessed with getting the sugar intake down and was never able to. I don't know what to say because it's obviously working for you! Chat Icon

Re: I feel like I'm obsessed with what I eat

This weekend was so hard. We went out to eat three times and I stressed myself out SO badly trying to find something to eat since most restaurants up here don't list their nutritional information. I did really well, and I'm down on the scale, but I really hate that I can't enjoy myself when we are out to eat. I never order dessert anymore, I limit myself to 1 glass of wine, and I almost never splurge because for some reason it takes my body a LONG time to recover when I have a cheat day.

On the plus side, today was the first time since I started that I was able to look at myself in the mirror (sans clothes Chat Icon) and say wow! I like what I see!

Um, I don't exercise at all Chat Icon

I was going to ask that! I'm an overthinker as well and know exactly what you're going through. I had spreadsheets, read every label, scrutinized every meal, all that.

What keeps me balanced though, and clears my mind to a degree, is just good old fashioned exercise. I had to force myself at first (motivation isn't something I could afford to 'wait' for) and now I just like it.

Here's the thought that kept me going (or scared, I should say): how am I going to keep this up for the rest of my life?

Because yo-yo'ing is what I've done before. BTDT. Tired of it. How do I *maintain* my weight once I get to where I want to be? What is it going to take in terms of eating and exercising? If I'm not diligent, will all this work be for nothing?

The first thing I would do if I were you would be to force yourself to exercise for 30 minutes a week. The kind of exercise that gets your heart beating at least 150 a minute. I can definitely tell the difference in my mind stress if I don't get exercise, and really 30 minutes isn't much. But it's a start. And go from there, and you won't need to stress about food as much. Make it something you don't hate and you never know, you might grow to like it. Chat Icon
