Glen Cove?

The never ending search for a rental house/apartment continues, I broadened our search to Glen Cove/Glen Head and found a rental house in Glen Cove. I drove by the town recently, it looks nice. Anyone have an personal experience? We will be renting for three years so we want something we really like. School district isn't important because DD will only be 4 by the time we leave.

Glenn Head is so nice... almost bought there. Just far from the highway.

There are some amazing areas (think mansions!) of Glen Cove and then some terrible areas (think projects) of Glen Cove. A lot of professionals rent in Glen Cove because you can get a lot for your money. The Avalon apartment complex is pretty nice though not really cheap. There are also some amazing duplexes and triplexes by the fire house. I think it is fine as long as you don't have to use the schools. Glen Head is objectively nicer, but there are few rentals available. You might want to check out Sea Cliff. There are a ton of rentals in that town and it is nicer than Glen Cove with a better school district.

Thanks for all the tips. We are checking out Glen Head, Sea Cliff, and Locust Valley, but even though I saw the perfect rental in LV it's a tough commute to LIJ for my husband everyday. I'd like to try to keep his commute under 20 minutes. We've struck out with more central areas like Roslyn, Mineola, NHP, etc.

Glen Cove?

If school districts don't matter what about the Glen oaks co-ops (queens floral park) deepdale garden co-ops (little neck) or the Langdale co-ops (queens new Hyde park) you should be able to find rentals in those!! They are all district 26 though, which from what I know is a better city district anyway (just incase you have to start DD in K if you stay a little later then planned)

During rush hours you wouldn't be able to get from glen cove/sea cliff/locust valley to LIJ in 20 minutes. They are off the beaten path, and you would have to take local roads either all the way there or to get to the highway, then deal with the highway before getting to lakeville rd for lij.

Good luck with your search!!

What about Great Neck or Manhasset. I was thinking Little Neck may have more rentals and easier to get into NYC if you wanted to as well. I live in GN and to get to LIJ isn't far at all.

I was thinking the same thing - the drive down Glen Cove Rd. will be congested if he's going to LIJ and the LIRR ride isn't as convenient.

Re: Glen Cove?

Thanks everyone! Manhasset and Great Neck are on our list. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a (long term) whole house rental in the area for under 3,000 a month. I'm going to keep looking, luckily we are able to stay with my parents so we have time to pick something great.

I did look into the coops in Glen Oaks Village, and the Deepdale community. I'll look into the other co op you suggested. Glen Oaks is super popular with the other fellows & residents, but I do ideally want a whole house. We have a dog and one baby (soon to be two) and would love to have some sort of private backyard space. It may be wishful thinking, but we will start to more seriously consider them if we can't find a house by mid September!

I really appreciate all the tips!

Re: Glen Cove?

I would try Port Washington or Manhasset Hills. You can definitely get a decent house in that price range (probably around $3000 or a little above per month). In manhasset you probably won't find a "real" house like you are looking for under $4500.

Live there & love it. You can FM me with any specific questions you have.
As a previous poster said, there are certainly some areas to be avoided though.

Re: Glen Cove?

I lived in Glen Cove. At the Avalon. I will leave out the drama I had with that place, but there are some bad areas. I found dime bags on the sidewalk walking home from train station just lying there on the sidewalk. I was attacked while walking my dog once as well. I heard there were bad areas but i didn't think were I was would be one of them, but that happens everywhere. I love the small town feel it had, movie, ice cream, restaurants, but it was a pita getting into nyc, 2 trains....and getting to LIE was a hike. I now live in Port and like it alot better even though it still is a hike to get of Port to LIE, but commute is better, town is nicer, more things to do. I rent a house here in Port, 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, jacuzzi, 2 floors, all new appliances, built in millwork, 3 doors from marina, $2100 and it is only 2 years old. We love it. Found it on Craigslist.

Thanks everyone! We actually decided against Glen Cove, it's just to far north. Adding an extra hour everyday into an 80+ hr work week isn't worth it to us. Back to the drawing board!
