Peanut Butter ?
DS is 15 months old and we have never given him peanut butter. Last night DH and I went out with friends and DS stayed with my in laws. She gave him a peanut butter & jelly sandwich for dinner. Which makes my blood boil for obvious reasons, but also because I left him pasta with peas for dinner so it's not like she didn't know what to feed him. Luckily, he had no reaction. My question is, do you think it is safe to continue giving him the peanut butter or should I go back to my plan of waiting until 3 even though he has had it now? I'm afraid he will develop the allergy by eating it earlier.

If he didn't have a reaction then I think he should be okay. I'm pretty sure I gave both my kids things with peanuts after they turned one, and everything was okay and no reactions so far at 2 or 4.

Eating it earlier will not cause an allergy to develop. There are actually a lot of studies that show that there may be a connection between early introduction of foods and decreased allergies. Since he had no reaction, it is fine to continue giving it to him.

DD#2 had it at 2 and DD#1 at 13 months. Actually not peanut butter but shellfish related. My girls' allergist told me that waiting until 2-3 to start a food can actually increase your chances of getting an allergy. Then again he said some newer studies are showing the earlier (6+ months) you start a food the less likely for an allergy. I don't think I would start before 12 months but my ped said the same thing.
Etd to add that many do not have a reaction the 1st time - I was told by 2 allergists and several peds that you need to try things 3-4 times before you will know for sure. While some might have a reaction the 1st time others it takes a while for it to build up and the reaction comes with encounter 2 or 3. Which is why when you introduce new foods to infants they suggest you do one new food for a few days then go to the next.

Thanks ladies! You know, I knew that that was a myth that the earlier you gave it the more likely an allergy will develop... I was just nervous. I think I will try it again soon, but just a taste not on a sandwich. He did love it, so it will be nice to have another lunch option for him.

Our doctor is adamant we start at 12 months, she is more concerned that delaying it will cause the allergy so I would continue.

My son also has nut allergies (ALL nuts - peanuts and tree nuts) and a sesame allergy. For ALL of those, he did not react the first time the foods were given, but on subsequent times... sometimes even the 4th or 5th time. He now has an epi pen.
So, I would continue to give the PB, but be careful and always watch for reactions (which will happen immediately).
Keep benadryl on hand! This is what helped us when he had his first reactions.

dd had a slight reaction to a russell stoffers from the assorted nut box and i didnt connect it until her next reaction which was peanut butter and jelly from my dh....and then she got tested just to prove the inevitable ......but its true to watch every time you give it because its very possible that a reaction might not occur the first time its given....hence why most peds say to try all baby foods three days in a row before going on to the next new baby food

my DS & DD started with peanut products at about 9-10 months old. straight up peanut butter at a year. NO allergies here, we were told the earlier the better. the longer you delay it the more more of a chance they will develop an allergy

My DS had no reaction the first time he had PB. The second time, his entire face filled up with hives and his eyes swelled. I would follow the 3 day rule just to make sure... just because he didn't react the first time, doesn't mean he's not allergic.

others have answered this question well, with my oldest ,he used to eat peanut butter then eventually developed peanut allergies. Not because of eating the peanut butter,I'm just saying keep an eye out ,things can change.

DS is almost 14 months and i gave him PB for what i thought was the first time on Saturday. i later found out that DH gave it to him already 
my ped said after 12 months to try it. i would continue giving it but like others said, still monitor the next few times

You can give peanut butter after a year old.. If you never said that your child can't have something, then there really isn't an issue. My son has a soy allergy and I write down what he can eat.. If it isn't on the list, then he isn't allowed to get it and his sitters know that!!

MIL doesn't have a list of what he can eat, BUT I have told her on numerous occasions that we were waiting until one year for berries, and 2-3 years for peanut butter & shellfish. Now I wonder if she gave him berries before a year...oh well, even if she did he is obviously not allergic.

Every ped is going to have a different opinion on what foods to give when. My ped ok'd berries at 9m and shellfish at 18m. I think it's ok, but I'd do the three-day rule on PB just to make sure.
I'd be pizzed too though.

AH.... They don't always listen!!! LOL That is why I wrote down DS's stuff..
Allergies are weird. No one in my family or hubby's has food allergies, but our son does!
And it can happen after a few times.... I keep Benadryl close by when we try something new...

This is worries me, my daughter rarely eats peanut butter, she doesn't like it, and only eats fish once in awhile, but I am so terrified of allergies that now I am thinking I should make an effort to give it to her more.
