If your child gets an allowance...
how much do they get?
DD is five and we want to start giving her one, partly to emphasize the role of chores and also because I want her to have a better understanding of money. But I don't want to give her too much or too little.

DS is 5 and we are going to start an allowance. One of the 'teaching your kids about finances' books I read suggested $1 for each year of age so we are starting with $5. Of course, this also depends on the parent's finances and comfort level with the amount. It was suggested that, when determining an amount, there be enough to save, put away for charity and some leftover to spend.

We do the $1/year amount. DS has gotten a few "raises" over the years on his birthdays.
I gave him a checkbook balance book, so he keeps track of the money he gets, records what he spends, and he balances his books every so often. (I saw he made a math error one time, so I made sure he counted his money, and compared it to his book, to show him how important it is to make sure they match.)

Id going to be the ridiculous mom right now 
My boys already take out the garbage, feed the dog and take in the mail, but I dont pay them for regular jobs. IMO they should help out. I divised another way to teach them about money. They need to earn it and its helping something else out too!
My boys think its SOOO funny to fart and burp. They are disgusting about it. They force it out and try to out do each other. Well, I tried to put a stop to it and that didnt work. Then my 2 year old daughter started! So embarrassing but shes trying to be like her brothers and shes good at it too 
So we have a chart on the fridge. Every time Jack farts/burps and does it on purpose, tries to make it public knowledge etc then Gabe gets 25 cents. If Gabe does it then Jack gets 25 cents. They both earn money if mommy has an accident
When they then beg me for something at the store, if they have EARNED it, they can have it, then we go home and take the money off the balance. Now that they are getting the hang of it Im going to add extra things on it... Maybe next will be going into your bed when mom asks you to, without a fight.
Crazy right?

My boys don't get a regular allowance either anymore. It just seemed to be rewarding them for things that they should do and it gave them the idea that doing their chores was an option. "I don't feel like clearing the table.. you don't have to give me allowance this week.." WHAAAAAAAAAT??
So we do something similar to you. We offer tickets for random things that aren't required. Like.. when Robbie volunteered to help the gym coach set up and dismantle field day for the little kids.. he got a ticket. When Robbie was sick last week and Noah did all of his chores for him.. and he got a ticket. Sometimes it is for silly things.. a fantastic hug or a funny joke. Sometimes it's for more serious things.. standing up for a kid who's being bullied. Sometimes they don't get them when they think they should.. usually when I suspect they are angling for a ticket rather than acting purely. But.. at the end of the month they can choose to cash in their tickets. We have a prize chart (Day Out with Mommy/Daddy, Friend sleepover, 30 minutes extra before bedtime on non-school nights, get out of punishment free card, choose dinner 4 times, etc.. They also have the option to cash each ticket in for a face value of $1 each.. but they almost NEVER take that option.
Translating it into 'real' money.. based on the number of tickets we give, it would probably average out to $20-25/month each.

I really like the ticket idea.

we work with stickers. They have to do at least 4 sticker worthy acts a day (brushing teeth, cleaning up after themselves, saying please/thank you, no whining during hw, etc), stickers over that get $.25. They get $1 automatically, then we count the stickers at the end of the week.

We just started giving DS an "allowance" for doing specific chores. He helped DH the other day and we gave him $5.
