Re: what exactly is autistic stimming?
Self stimulatory behavior. Usually an individual wih autism stims to get some sort of sensory feedback. Individuals with autism also engage in what is called stereotypy, which are repetitive behaviors that are not necessarily self stimulatory...

Re: what exactly is autistic stimming?
DS' stim behavior is mainly verbal.
When DS was little he would make this sound: "EEEEEEEEEE" especially when stressed. Now he prefers making a motor like noise. Those are his verbal stims. He also sings the same song over and over as a way to soothe himself - Blackbird by the Beatles

Re: what exactly is autistic stimming?
My DD does autistic stiimming. She will tend to repeat the same phrase over and over again.

Mine makes the "nnnnnnn" sound a lot, and hand flaps and jumps when excited.

Re: what exactly is autistic stimming?
My DS flaps his arms and hands. As for verbal, he repeats words and sounds over and over.

Re: what exactly is autistic stimming?
My brother is 17 now and has autism, and I asked him why he does that "thing with the sticks" and he told me "It feels so good!" lol! He had a stim when he was younger where he took two sticks and waved them fast near by each other near the corner of his eye. He also told me now that he was "seeing how things worked" and that he doesn't have to use the sticks now because he has a computer. Very interesting.

Re: what exactly is autistic stimming?
My 7 year old stims all the time. Mainly what we call "tapping" whatever at the moment he's interested in he taps it repetitively in his hand, and it's followed with vocal tics (sounds like eeeeee) and he's usually moving back and forth.

Re: what exactly is autistic stimming?
My sons stimming is rocking from side to side. Almost like there is a song in his head. He's been doing this since he was about 7 months old.

Re: what exactly is autistic stimming?
My DS is 3 and he has vocal stimming. He makes a motor sound, or an eeeeeee sound, or hums the same words over and over. he also runs with his hands up by his shoulders.
