How to properly dispose of US flag?
I bought a new flag and want to properly dispose of our old one, which is ripped/torn. I can send it into a flag company and they'll send it to Boy Scouts of America for "proper" disposal on Flag Day, but is there anything closer/local that I could do? TIA.

Contact your local town hall and ask them. Most town halls have collection bins. I do not know where you live, but there is a bin in front of the Babylon town hall on sunrise.

Thanks - I'm in Brookhaven, so I'm calling 451-TOWN now.

There's a mailbox type thing at the small firehouse in Medford on Southhaven Ave. Maybe other firehouses have something similar?

Re: How to properly dispose of US flag?
The only definitive answer is found in the US Flag Code. TITLE 4 > CHAPTER 1 > Sec. 8(k). It states:
"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning"
You can find a good copy of the entire US Flag Code at the Legal Information Institute, Cornell Law School

Re: How to properly dispose of US flag?
Go to the nearest VFW Hall or American Legion or even firehouse and they'll take it and dispose of it properly. I know at DH's VFW, they have a drop-off bin for those that want to dispose of old flags.

How to properly dispose of US flag?
I remember as a girl scout we had 3-4 flags each time we went camping to 'retire' OMG such a process too. Each star was removed, each stripe and it was burned all separately, stars, stripes and blue field.
Really made it feel special... looking at how they worn, how proud they flew, how many times were they folded over the years, what have they seen, what did the fly half mast for?

I personally would just throw it away. I'm not saying that you should. That's just what I would do. I just personally would know that I didn't mean any disrespect but it was tattered and I got a new one to display. Looks like I'm the only one though so I guess I'd be sorta wrong to do that.

As other posters have mentioned any VFW, American Legion, Local Cub/Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts.
Thanks for taking the time to properly dispose of your flag.
