Anyone else get a letter that STATE FARM is dropping you for home owners...
(I dont have the letter in front of me)
because they say the area is at a higher risk or something. It's definetly not because of US, we have never filed a claim. We are NOT in a flood zone.
We live in Oceanside. My neighbors across the street have state farm too and didnt get this letter
Also... any recommdations for where to look for home owners insurance?
eta: this is what the letter says:
we regret to inform you that we cannot continue to provide your homeowners policy insurance coverage. In accordance with the terms and conditions of your policy and laws of your state your policy will not be renewed as off Aug 22. THis action is due to loss to your property from catastrophe such as a hurricane or other severe weather events.

We got the same letter from All State a few years ago. They dropped us for no reason even though we have never filed a claim. We switched to State Farm who holds both our homeowners and flood insurance. We did receive a letter from State Farm informing us that they would no longer cover our flood insurance and that was being handled by the fed gov't.

Re: Anyone else get a letter that STATE FARM is dropping you for home owners...
State Farm tried to drop us 2 weeks after we closed on our home stating that our roof was in disrepair.... We got a new roof (which wasn't necessarily needed - the old one was still fine and had a few good years left). Once we got the new roof, we were reinstated.
They send appraisers around and check properties. Perhaps their appraiser looked at the wrong address? Call!

Yep! We are in Oceanside too- apparently if you are 1 mile away from the water you are considered high risk. The insurance companies go on a "hundred year rule" that LI is due for a big hurricane this year.
My broker had a guy for us to use, we are paying a lot more, but also increased our policy since we recently renovated.

We are in Oceanside and when we were looking for a lower rate we were told State Farm wasnt writing NEW policies in the area. Our neighbor was dropped by Liberty Mutual, but we also had Liberty and had no problems (aside from the price more than doubling in 4 years). We went with Mercury, got great coverage and a SUPER reasonable rate. You can contact

Tell her Marie referred you. I dont know her personally but she was a huge help to me so i'd like to pass on her info!

I don't know if this is typical, but Michele took FOREVER to get me a quote (2 weeks!)--so if you're in a rush you may want to shop around.

Re: Anyone else get a letter that STATE FARM is dropping you for home owners...
The independent insurance market is much different than the captive market. With so many carriers a broker or independent agency has to choose from, it can take time to find the perfect match of needed coverage and maximum premium dollar value.
This is quite different than walking into a captive agency (e.g. State Farm, Allstate, Liberty Mutual, etc.). These agents have access to only one company...the name on the sign outside of their store. That's why they an pull a quote for you in a very short time.

This post is over a year old! So they're talking about the big hurricane that was due for 2011... I guess we got Hurricane [Tropical Storm] Irene so that was something...
