Name question - would you be upset if your friend used the same name as your DC?

My husband and I are having a hard time picking a boys name. But the one name we both love also happens to be one of my close friends sons name. Her son is 8 and we live in different towns and don't see each other as much, with the kids as, we would like. (Maybe 6 times a year) I would ask her if she would mind us using it, but I am curious to know everyone's opinion.
Would you just cross it off your list or would you use the name you love?

I don't see why you can't use it and personally i wouldn't ask for permission. I'm sure he's not the only kid with that name and she would be flattered

It would never cross my mind to be upset. I love my son's name and if my friend picked it I'd be flattered and happy!

I'd use it and not ask for permission. She doesn't own that name, and should see it as flattery.

If a good friend of mine came to me today and said they wanted to name their child DS's name (he's 2 weeks old right now) and their child was due in a month, I'd be slightly perplexed by it and a little annoyed. But I probably wouldn't tell her so much. I'd probably just smile and say how it's a wonderful name and we love it.

If I found out after the baby was born, I wouldn't even give it a second thought whether she'd considered our son's name or not. I'd probably just assume she hadn't thought about us in her name consideration (which is what I'd prefer, actually).

So, I wouldn't ask if you want to use it. Just do it.

I would use it. DH's friend named his son the name we are using and at first I was upset but DH said it doesn't matter. We can use the name anyway......

I would use it. She doesn't own the name and really I'm sure if you go down the list of names you could probably find someone with that name. I have about 3 Roberts, 4 Franks, and 2 Nicholas' in my family all around the same age. Use a name you like and don't worry about if other people will get upset because you "stole" their name.

Thanks so much for all the responses ladies! This makes me feel much better. I remember when she was pregnant and told me the name I was a little sad because I loved the name so much! I know if it was me, I would feel flattered also and I don't think she would be upset about it. But thanks for the reassurance!

I personally would never use a friends name. I take time and effort to pick a name that is different from anyone I know.

I had a family member use my son's name and the whole family was like "Why would you do that?"

It would bother me, so I wouldn't do it to anyone else.

No. It's hard enough picking a name. I wouldn't want my friends to eliminate a name they loved because I used it. If it was entirely unique and they had never heard of it before, that might be one thing. But if I chose a name in the top 100 or even top 1000, it's fair game for others to use.

I would not. People don't own a name, an anniversary weekend, a decor style. I don't even see why you need to ask. She should be flattered.

I wouldn't ask, I'd just use it. They're going to be far enough in age that it's not like they'll really be playmates or anything.

It's a name, pick it and don't worry whose son has the same name. Every other girl in my town is named Gianna and boys are Anthony or Matthew , some parents are actually related or friends ... Who cares. I never understood this whole oh they picked the same name thing, it's silly IMO.
We named our son Alexander my good friend's ( she used to be my former boss when I used to nanny for her) son's name is also Alexander, he is 9 and they live in the city, we barely see them.
We picked the name bc we both loved it and it was the only name we agreed on, it never even crossed my mind that my friend would not like it or to ask them.

Use it. I ended eliminating two names off of my list because I know that these two friends would be mad if I used their DS's name. One I really liked and DH was kind of pissed that I won't consider because it might upset someone.

I personally don't care. It's a name. I'm going to pick a name for DS and I'm sure hundreds if not thousands of other kids are going to be named that same thing... Kids in his classes, kids in sports, kids in the neighborhood, probably even kids of friends and kids of family members. I doesn't bother me in the least.

I'm in the minority here, but I'd mention it to her. You don't need her permission of course, but since you're friends, IMO it'd be stranger NOT to say something.

Personally It wouldn't bother me if a friend named her baby the same as my son or daughter but I think it would bother me if I liked a name and told my friend I was naming my kid that and then she had the baby first and used that name.. I think that would upset me more, lol.

Also I like to be a little different and prob wouldnt use the same name of my friends child.. but thats just me. I don't think it matters though if you really looove the name!

i wouldn't mention anything to her, but i wouldn't use the same name either. DH's neice is Julianne and i had always loved a variation of that name of a girl. I would not give LO now that variation because its too similar to our neice's name and would like to give oour own LO her own unique name that is already not inthe family. But I am referring to family names, and not friends.

When I was pregnant with Johnny, we went back and forth between John and Ryan. We chose john because its DH's name and thought it would be nice, but said to our friends that we would definitely go with Ryan if we had another boy.

A year later, our close friends had a son...and named him Ryan. My friend actually called me from the hospital, said "don't be upset, we just love the name ryan and went with that, i know its one of your names too..".

For a nanosecond I felt weird about it...because I then felt like if i had another boy i couldn't now name him Ryan. However, that passed and it didn't bother me. And of course, we went on to have little Ryan a year later, lol...we always joke about what a great name it is. Its not a big deal at all, its flattering actually!!

Hell yeah! I had my dd in Dec 07 and my 1st cousin named her dd the same name in Jan 08!! It's not a common name so I was a little disturbed.

I wouldnt but I am the minority. My cousin named her son the same as my nephew and everyone is like thats strange. I think it would bother me.
