I have a virus and I would have called in sick tomorrow with a Dr's note from an appointment Saturday had not the DOE closed.

I know we get 10 self-treated days. If you have a medical note, then do you get unlimited sick days?

I'm definitely not planning to take a lot of days, but I'm just curious how it works...

No, the Dr.'s notes are more a CYA maneuver. I know there is a rule concerning the consecutive number of days that you can be out WITHOUT a doctor's note which is why you should always try and get one if you can. But we get 10 days, that's it. Doesn't matter if you were in the hospital with pneumonia or you called in 10x to get your nails done. 10 days is 10 days. The only days that are not counted in your CAR are jury duty, death in immediate family and graduations. There may be a few other circumstances but I'm not sure what they are.

OK that's different than what's on the UFT Web site, which says "If you take more than 10 self-treated days in any school year, you will not be paid for those additional absences unless you submit a doctor’s note, even if you have accumulated days in your Cumulative Absence Reserve (CAR). Wherever possible, you should submit medical certification for each day you are absent to preserve as many of your self-treated days as possible."

That makes it seem like if you have days in your CAR, you can use them with Dr. notes. (I'm a first year DOE teacher so I don't have any days in my CAR anyway...)

ok so with a note, you can use your car days, but you can't go above the car even with a note?

you use up your car, go negative 20 days and then get docked each day whether you have a note or not after you are negative 20.
