Concerns about gaining weight too fast
With my 1st pregnancy I gained about 50lbs. While I did lose all of the weight, it was really hard and took much longer than I expected. I really dont want to go down that same path but here I am 6 1/2 weeks pregnant and already up 3lbs! I think it may have something to do with how restrictive my diet normally is (about 1200 calories a day and working out everyday.) Now im probably consuming 1800 and ive been working so much and feeling so nauseus the last couple of weeks ive only been working out like 3 days a week.
My question is - how do you ladies manage weight gain while pregnant while being healthy and eating enough for the baby?

Concerns about gaining weight too fast
I had a lot of morning sickness the first trimester , so carbs were the only thing I would eat. and I ended up putting on about 8-10 lbs my 1st trimester! I'm 29 weeks and up about 25lbs. hoping to stay under 35 for the whole pregnancy. I try to go to the gym, take pre-natal yoga, eat lots of fruit. but I know my body is going to gain what it needs for my baby.

Re: Concerns about gaining weight too fast
My doctor told me the baby only needed an extra 300 calories a day in the second trimester and 450-500 a day in the third trimester and that since I was a pretty average weight I should expect to gain ~10lbs in the first 20 weeks and then a pound a week after that. BUT depending on your starting weight that will vary. If you're on the thinner side you can expect to gain more and if you're over weight probably less. So in the beginning I really just added some snacks; fruit, granola bars and attempted to choke down yogurt (which I hate). I did eat a bagel every morning the first tri but managed to keep my total weight gain in the first 20 weeks to around 11-12lbs. All in all I just tried to add a lot of fruits and veggies to my diet. If there is an apple or a banana in the fruit basket on my counter I"m more likely to grab that than look in my cabinets for Oreos... and then I'm even less likely to eat a huge dinner. I even keep grapes and pineapple washed and cut up in containers right in the front of the refrigerator so when I open the door they are the first thing I see and being that I'm super lazy I'll just grab that rather than move it and look for something else
I definitely didn't exercise as much as I should have and now I don't at all so I think the 3 days you're getting in now is great!!

Re: Concerns about gaining weight too fast
I gained a lot of weight fast too because I was so sick and kept eating carbs to help the nausea. In the past week I have felt normal again, so I am back to my old healthy eating habits. I haven't gained since. So, my advice is as long as you are feeling ok, go back to your original eating habits, with maybe a few extra hundred calories.

Re: Concerns about gaining weight too fast
I have the same concerns. I am a person who worked out intensely everyday and ate around 1200 calories with limited starchy carbs. I am now 11 weeks pregnant and have only gotten to the gym a few times a week because I just feel lousy. I eat what tastes good and what I can stomach at this point in hopes that things will even out and I will be able to return to healthy foods soon. I told my doctor this concern and he said to do what I need to do now so that I am eating and feeling as best is possible and not to concern myself with too much weight gain at this point. I told the nurse at my last appointment that I didnt want to know what I weighed but only wanted to know if there was a problem and I was gaining to fast. She looked at the scale (while I closed my eyes) and told me "youre fine." and that was that.
I have been told that as a thinner person (I was less than 100lbs) I would probably need to put on more weight and I am prepared for that. My motto is, as long as this baby is healthy, I am happy!
