Late Talkers

If your LO was a late talker, when did they start talking?

DD is almost 15 months and doesn't have a single word. Her receptive skills are amazing, and she understands so much, but doesn't speak at all (randomly we think we hear a word (owl, mama, mouse, book, kitty, hi), but then it never repeats.) SHe was an early walker, so I am hoping the old 'early walker, late talker' think is true here.

At 15 months DS had no words. At 21 months he has 10-15 words and now at 23 months he has almost 40 words. I am attributing his late talking to a couple of factors. A lot of times we just know what he wants and give it to him without making him say it. For the past 2 months I have been very diligent with repeating words over and over and he is "getting it". Also he seem very shy about talking. When he says a new word he then covers his face. I always make a big deal about it by clapping and saying that was so great, you did so well saying that new word. I am trying my best to get him to say more words and it seems to be working.

Just keep talking to her!!! It'll happen

DD is 17 months and she only has about 10 words. She understands EVERYTHING, so I am not too concerned. I think there is a wide range, and some kids are just later to talk than others.

Around 27months

She always understood what was said. I had her tested twice. We tried different things to get her to talk. She could do one word stuff but two words were meh for her. Then all of a sudden like a flood she was talking. It was so strange, freaky! The last evaluation happened pretty much the week the flood started and made me feel like a FOOL as she starts to 'TALK' to the evaluator. They two ladies took pity on me. "You should see your face" yeah. i was shocked! Then within 2 weeks she was all out conversing. Sure she wasn't giving a speech or articulating everything out but she was communicating.

I know kids on here who were very advanced in speech diction. Mine was not. But she's made up ground. haha

DS is 26 months and still not talking. He has said mama and dada, but never consistently. No other words at all. He just started saying "e i e i" when we sing Old MacDonald (not that it's really a word) but literally... that's it. He's been in speech therapy for 6 months now but still no words. He sure does whine though!! And he definitely understands everything and does what we ask him to do for the most part, so we're trying not to get too overly concerned. But it's so hard when we see kids who are a whole year younger than him saying multiple words.

dd walked at 9 1/2 months talked much much later. She is 2 1/2 now and just now starting to form full sentences.

She had a few words around 13 months, like mama, dada, and maybe 2-3 others.

I think she was so busy exploring, wlaking etc she didn't have time to talk

. She understood everything. I was not concerned. Well I was but not to the point I thought she needed speech.

I just tried to reinforce talking by making her say what she wanted/needed, or naming everything.

If she had just one word, it would make me feel so much better! Dh is ready to kill me because I am always worried about these milestones, and he is the total opposite end of the spectrum. So easy going!

Late Talkers

Have you tried baby signing? Very helpful to ease frustration, as it helps LOs communicate before they can talk. As you know, they understand so much more than they can say!

DS was early on a few things. He was walking independently at 10 months. As for talking, he said his first word at 7 months and barely anything after that. I was very concerned but our ped said there was a wide range for what's acceptable. Of course, this did NOT make me feel better.

However, at 29 months he had a WORD EXPLOSION. He's now learning about 10 new words a day, using almost few sentences and repeats on demand. I can't believe this is the same child.

Bottom line: They will talk when ready.

my dd didnt talk in full sentences till 2 and half yrs. People had me so worried etc.. Now in kindergarten the teacher says she is one of the brightest kids in the class..

Late Talkers

DS started to walk around 8 months and wouldn't really say much from 1 yr till now. He is 19 months and the past two weeks he has been saying new words like crazy. My niece is 6 months younger and says many words but has just started to learn to walk.
They all develop in their own way and own time. I was very worried ESP since I was comparing him to other kids. But they will speak when they are ready and when they do it is like a lightbulb goes off and the flood gates open.

My youngest was an early talker and my oldest was a late talker. He had 2-3 words at 18 months and more at 2 years. He is 4 now and he is still catching up. We speak multiple languages at home so it was part of the reason for his "delay" even though the pediatrician says it isn't officially a delay.

my niece is 28 months and still doesn't talk, she says only a few words like "mama" "bubbles", "go", but she grunts and points for the most part, and she also developed her own sign language for different words, like rubbing her tummy when she is hungry.. its pretty weird because no one taught her the signs, she just developed them on her own. However my sister doesn't want to put her in speech therapy because she was told as long as she understands (which she does) then eventually it will just come to her. I know though if it was me I'd at least try speech therapy.. oh well.

DD JUST started saying a couple of words around 15 months. She called me "nana" and said "dada" and then started with our dogs name and said baby. She was also an early walker (9 mos). It was just before her 15 month appt. And from there she really just exploded. By 18 months, I already lost count of how many words she had. Now, at 22 months, I can not believe her vocabulary. I wouldn't worry about it yet. I definitely wouldn't consider 15 months late--it's just not early.

DD didn't have more than 5-10 words by 2.5 and we had her tested and passed because of her receptive skills. a little past 2.5 when we were getting her re- tested all of a sudden she had a word explosion and has been non- stop talking and learning ever since.

What i have noticed is that with her being a late talker is that while she wasn't talking she was absorbing everything and knows alot more than the standards for her age and the year above.
