Any late talkers out there? Need some encouragement...
I'm getting a little sad...DS is 19 months and has very few words. He follows commands well, and understands everything, and gets what he wants, but he is very quiet and doesn't have many words. The ped. and EI weren't concerned since he follows commands and understands words.
Nonetheless, I am kind of sad. Any stories of late talkers who suddenly blossomed? Any tricks or tips? I stopped seeing some of my friends after one commented that I should just talk to him more (wow, if only I had thought of that! And if you knew me, you'd know that I can talk to a wall).

Re: Any late talkers out there? Need some success stories...
I know how you feel. DS was the same way had maybe 10 words at 2 and did not qualify for EI b/c of his comprehension. But something clicked about a week after his 2nd birthday and now at 2.5 he never stops talking. I did not do anything different, he just got it. Hang in there it will get better.

the son of a good friend of mine said next to nothing up until the age of about 2 & 1/2-3 and then out of nowhere he was talking up a storm. It was honestly amazing, he went from a few words to speaking in full sentences overnight.
I wouldnt worry since DC is still young, give it some time and see where he is in a few months.

Don't stress. DS was a late talker, barely any words by his 2nd b-day. He will now be 3 next month and talks up a storm. Just needed a little extra time!

Re: Any late talkers out there? Need some encouragement...
My DS didn't talk much at all. Around 18 months he started talking a little bit more, but some times between 18 months and 24 months he had a "language explosion."
NOW I know why they call it an explosion! It was insane! He hasn't stopped talking since.
So.... try to be patient... (I know it's hard) ... I'm sure if the ped and EI are not concerned, everythign is fine.

I'm in the same boat as you, so you're not alone I've had some people suggest the same things I hope it'll come soon for both of us! My DD is also having ear tubes surgery next week (for multiple ear infections), so I'm hoping that might help her speech as well.

Re: Any late talkers out there? Need some encouragement...
Late talker Dec 2010 so she was 28 mo
then BAM they just happened. Literally over night. I know people SAY that but really freaked me out! She went from pointing and maybe one or two words but no structure to literally SINGING twinkle twinkle little star. I took her out of daycare on the 10th for a trip, bought her back and they were like "what did you DO? she actually told us this is red and this is the yellow one" !!! I'm like "I have NO freaking CLUE!"
She just figured it out all of a sudden.
I tried repeating one word a million times, shoe this and shoe that and your shoe, my shoe, where's the shoe, etc,. All i got was a photo of her shoe (she took my phone).
I never baby talked her. I always asked her to say what she meant but she'd rather go without that speak.
All I can say is hang in there!

at 24 mos, he had 7 everyday words.
started speech. honestly...they could not get him talking either. one day, he just started speaking. i videotaped him and after a year he graduated from EI, just like that.
they were shocked he was holding back so much. he is so smart. the things he says are shocking.

I wouldnt worry since DC is still young, give it some time and see where he is in a few months. This was also the case with my DS. He is speaking in fluent sentences with a skill level beyond his chronological age.

Re: Any late talkers out there? Need some encouragement...
My older son was a late talker. Had 5 real words at 18 mos. And less than 50 by 2yrs but between 22-24 mos you saw the change and the few words he had he was combing. He receptive language was very high. He was very smart - knew all his letters, numbers, etc. At 2 he started to take off...about a month after his 2nd birthday I couldn't keep track of his words anymore. The only issue was he spoke so much so soon and went right into story telling - he was hard to understand. He did eventually qualify for artic at around 3.5 and took that for a year and then no longer qualified.

Re: Any late talkers out there? Need some encouragement...
I'm in the same situation...She babbles alot..but doesn't have many clear words. Doctor also said do not worry. She understands what you are telling her and she communicates what she wants in her own way right now. My house is not quiet either. There is always someone talking to her.
Do not be sad. They will talk in their own time. My older DD talked very early in sentences so I compare alot to her...but we just can't do that. They are individuals. Every baby is different.

Re: Any late talkers out there? Need some encouragement...
DS wasn't a "late talker" but he did have a parnoid mother...
I got flash cards and went thru them like they were addition cards I used in elementary school.
I put a few on the floor and made him get the "cat" then we'd say cat a few times. I'd say those words in the car to/from daycare.
DS liked the tractor so I gave him that card since it was a hard word...turns out it was one of his first words.
ETA: Has DS had his hearing checked? Has he had a lot of ear infections?
DS's speech got much better after he had tubes put in. He had that "explosion" of words about 3 days before 18 mos, and tubes at 22 mos. He had A LOT of ear infections

yup, my kid was mute until about 18 months. Like never even babbled. She had very few words until about 22-23 months she had an INSANE verbal explosion. Now I spend my day saying, "Alexa, can you be quiet for just one minute?

Re: Any late talkers out there? Need some encouragement...
both of my kids were late talkers. E1 vocabulary exploded around 18-19 months but E2 took until 22 months.
Once he started, it didn't stop. People were/are always amazed at the complex thoughts/sentences/stories that have come from E2 (he's almost 3 now).
I was never worried because I knew the comprehension was there.
