Anyone being told their baby is on the small side?

The last time i had a sono I was 24w and the sono tech told me that the baby was onthe small side. when i spoke with the NP, she let me know that the baby was fine, completely within range and to not worry about it.

Today, I went in for my glucose exam and had another sono. I am 27w1d and again, a different sono tech asks me how far along i am. I tell her and i ask her if everything is ok and she said she is measuring small. So when i speak with the Dr. he told me to stop listening to the sono techs. the baby is within range. that i'm not a huge woman so i wouldn' tbe having a huge baby.

I'm still a worrywort. Anyone care to put me at ease or going through ther same thing?

If the doctor doesn't seem concerned I wouldn't worry. Babies come in all different sizes and maybe you are just having a petite one nothing to worry about.

I'm going through the same thing. My baby is measuring small as well. My doctor has been monitoring me more often. If my baby drops below "normal" they will induce and have him delivered early.

Honestly there is nothing you can do besides take care of yourself. Babies come when they are ready and in all different sizes. . . .

at the 24w sono they told me she was about 1½ opounds and today they told me she was 1 pound 13 ounces.
so i guess if there are 16 ounces in a pound, and she was 1½ pounds before, she would have been 1 pound 8 ounces, so she grew some...that is making me feel better (my own distorted logic) but the Dr. did say she was well within range.

i'm being monitored pretty often because i am seeing a high risk OBGYN...but the Dr. didn't seem concerned. I hope this baby catches up and puts on some weight so she makes me feel better!

No experience with this specifically, but I DO have experience with a sono tech who was HORRIBLY WRONG!! (sorry to any sono techs out there reading this .. ) but I am hesitant to trust what they say and I would ALWAYS only take the doctor's word. If the doctor says it's fine, I'd go by that... If you're still nervous, ask the doctor to explain more - or get a second opinion. But.. seriously.. after my experiences, I always tell people to take what the sono tech says with a grain of salt. Anyone being told their baby is on the small side?

They said the same thing to my sis in law and the baby is perfectly healthy and fine. Not to worry especially if the doctor is not concerned

Re: Anyone being told their baby is on the small side?

DS1 was measuring small and that was coming from the ob, not the techs. They drove me crazy from about 32-weeks until the end (weekly monitoring, etc.). He was born at close to 7lbs. I'm using a different practitioner this time and she felt that baby at around 27-weeks and mentioned that this was a small baby, but nothing to worry about. As long as the baby continues to grow, everything should be a-okay!

Re: Anyone being told their baby is on the small side?

ok I'm going to share my story of when I was pregnant with DS.

I went in for my 36 week growth sono, the technician was very nice, she was taking measurements and talking to me throughout the whole thing. At the end of the sono she goes to me "ok so we want to see you back in 2 weeks" I quickly got scared. My OB told me the growth sono was a one time thing, why did I have to come back. I asked "why, is there something wrong?" and she said well the baby is measuring small. I freaked out, I didn't know what that meant, she said they wanted to check the size again in 2 weeks. I told her I wasn't moving until she got a doctor in the room to talk to me and explain what the heck was going on. (my sono was at the hospital so I knew for a fact that there were drs there). She looked at me like I was a nut job. I was getting flustered, I was on the verge of a panic attack. She came back 10 minutes later with the chairperson of the maternal/fetal department who explained to me in great detail that the baby was "fine" and was just measuring a bit small around the waist. He assured me all was ok but said it would be better to come in for weekly sonos and non-stress tests just to monitor the blood flow from the placenta and the baby's growth. My OB even called me and told me the dr I spoke with called her and let her know I was very scared but that all was ok. She assured me that I was not going to have a giant baby bc I am petite and it's better to have a small baby passing through your hoo ha.

I went in weekly for the last 4 weeks of my pregnancy, which reassured me but scared me every single time I had to go. I did not enjoy my last month of pregnancy, I was a nervous wreck, I couldnt wait for my son to be in my arms.

My DS was born at 40w4d and he was 6lbs 2 ounces, 19 inches long. He was a perfect size. I was worried for no reason, I blame the sono tech, she should have left it up to my dr. to order an additional sono if she felt the baby was small.

Please don't freak out, don't get panicky. Your baby is fine, not all babies are born enormous, the charts that they use to check growth are not accurate for ALL babies.

I was told the same thing - and they had me going nuts! I was at the Dr like 4 times in 2 weeks. They ended up inducing me @ 39 weeks. Turns out DD was born 6lbs 1oz (perfectly fine) but someway, somehow her cord was actually tied in a knot!! Try not to stress yourself out - they will do all the tests that they need to do to make sure baby is good - and if they feel the need to deliver you - everything will be fine! I agree with the others that if your Dr isn't concerned then don't worry about it. Babies come in different sizes, what's important is that you are being monitored and if anything is wrong your Dr will make the right choice for you.

They kept telling me that DD was measuring small throughout my pregnancy. Even at the hospital they were using their "code language" for a small birth weight baby... Well, she ended up being 6lb. 8oz. and was PERFECT!!!! If your doctor is telling you the baby is in range then Im sure its fine!

Re: Anyone being told their baby is on the small side?

My baby measured small my entire pregnancy...at my growth sono at 36 weeks his head was measuring 32 weeks and other measurements were small too. I knew my baby would be on the smaller side, but it made me worried during the end. I ended up delivering a few days late and he was 6lb 15oz - a perfect size!! My doctor was never concerned at any point that there was something wrong.

Re: Anyone being told their baby is on the small side?

At 32w my daughter was measuring 28w. My dr wasn't worried, especially because my son was only 5lbs13 oz. My daughter weighed 5 lbs 6 oz at birth. Small, but perfectly healthy. I am a small person and apparently make small babies. The "standard " measurements are only an average. Sometimes I wonder how people had babies before sono technologyChat Icon Trust your dr. I wouldn't worry.
