Need guidance HURRICANE SANDY
I have a 7 years old boy with autism I moved to NY and he was doing good in school. The hurricane Sandy hit and left us homeless, carless and jobless because I had no where to go and school hadn't opened, the government didn't want to help us bc I was not on the lease and it was an illegal rental. I was in a shelter for a week and a half. My relative told me to come to Philadelphia to stay So I took the greyhound bus and they stole our luggage also and once we got here in less than 2 days , they need me to move because they need the space. I have NO money, no clothes and no car in another city and feeling overwhelmed. If you know of anything please let me know, I just want my son to have a better education just because I believe he deserves a chance. Please help

Re: Need guidance HURRICANE SANDY
Reading your story made me so sad. I honestly don't know what will help in your situation, but here are a few suggestions: call the Red Cross as well as some local churches or synagogues to see if any of those organizations have resources that can help you; call a legal aid office to see if they can help you with govt aid and schooling for your son (be sure to mention your son has a disability if he has autism). Can you stay with relatives in the meantime until you get back on your feet? Good luck.

Re: Need guidance HURRICANE SANDY
Now is a good time to get some help. What size clothes does your son wear? What kind of work do you do? Do you have any family at all? I'm sorry you were displaced for a second time when you were asked to leave after 2 days. It sounds like you moved here not too long ago. Where did you move from? Do you have any one there that can help you temporarily while you get on your feet?

Re: Need guidance HURRICANE SANDY
First, I'm so sorry. Second, I'm not normally a supporter of theirs at all but I took a quick peek at the Autism Speaks page and they actually have a section for help with Hurricane Sandy victims....maybe give them a call as well to explain your situation...hopefully they can help with something at least point you in the right direction. Being a victim of the storm is bad enough without adding your DS and his needs on top of it. I feel terrible for you, I will try to look around some more and see what comes up to help. Where are you now? Still in Philly or back in NY?

Need guidance HURRICANE SANDY
I am staying in Philly for now but eventually want to back to NY I left because I didn't want to be in a shelter anymore with my son he would have a tantrum every 2 hours because he wanted to go home and other people don't understand that a spanking won't fix his problem and that he isn't a spoiled brat.My son is size 14- 16 and shoes size 3. Thank you guys for your kind words only people with children with special needs understand the frustration to start all over again.

Maybe go into the local school?
When I went to our district's office for DS CPSE meeting, I saw a sign posted re: things to talk to them about, and "Is your child homeless" is the one thing that remains etched in my brain.
I know they are horrible places but the Dept of Social Services as well.
