Re: Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
Before Irene I put together an emergency kit with water bottles and nonperishable food. I've actually raided it because the food is mostly expired now and I need re-stock.
I'm going to get some batteries and check flashlights and place them around the house. For irene I wrapped important electronics in plastic bags and put them in high shelves on closets. I also filled the bathtub with water. it was all unneccessary, but it was a good test run.
Also make sure you have a battery powered radio..

Re: Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
Well ... I have 2 experiences preparing for major storms and all I'll say is, DON'T do what I do!
For a snow storm many years ago, my dh said to get food to keep in the house in case we can't get out easily. I bought cupcakes.
For the hurricane we had last year, I thought I was the smartest one at the supermarket. I went on got all kinds of cold cut meats.. side salads... and I was wondering why the lines to get these things wasn't longer. Well.... that went over REAL well when we lost electricity and all the food was stuck in our fridge! Oops!

Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
I honestly don't go super crazy. I make sure we have flashlights and batteries, enough diapers and wipes for a few extra days for ds, gas in the car and snacks/food that is non perishable and doesn't need to be cooked (I have an electric stove) I also grab a couple of the gallon jugs of water.

Re: Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
Have your car's gas tank filled up. Have gallon jugs of bottled water. Canned food that can be eaten from the can without heating or refrigerator (tuna fish) and a manual can opener, nutella, peanut butter. Crackers, dried cereal, granola bars blankets change of clothing cash something battery operated so you can get the news/weather candles matches flashlight batteries

Re: Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
All I know is thank god we made it to the beer distributor last weekend!
I actually do keep emergency supplies for us and the cats in the garage. And all their carriers remain assembled on a shelf in the garage in case of any emergency at all, not just natural disaster.
Aside from the precautions one would take for a storm - dragging the BBQ into the garage, along with outdoor furniture - we're usually pretty well-stocked in our pantry, and we live in an urban area where the stores will remain open.

I don't plan on doing anything very different than getting some extra food and making sure I have cash on hand.

I just bought a small radio that uses batteries, and additional batteries. Also, make sure all your gadgets have a full charge.

This - I don't go too nuts. DH usually makes sure we have flashlights and we charge our phones to full battery. I get some extra food that won't go bad (and sometimes use it as an excuse to bake ). For us the hardest part is managing the dog's bathroom breaks. We try to get him to get as much out as possible right before it gets bad out. For Irene my ILs evacuated to us. Thank goodness we're in a bigger apartment now because in our 1 bedroom apartment we had 6 people and 2 dogs

Re: Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
If it will hit, we'll get a a case of water and freeze it like we did last time. The frozen bottles helped keep things in our freezers and fridge cold for a couple of days. I'll also make extra ice and store it in ziploc bags over the next few days.
I think we still have batteries, I'll make sure flashlights are readily available. We'll also make sure our gas cans are filled in case we need gas for our cars or a generator that we can borrow from my mil.
Other than that, just the staples, bread, jelly, peanut butter, snacks, cereal (can eat dry if need to). Maybe take out a little cash to have on hand.

Re: Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
All I know is I just did a huge stock up on food this week and I am going to try my hardest to eat it all in the next few days. If we lose power for a few days, like we did with Irene, I can't chance we'll lose all that food again!
As far as prep, I make sure we have batteries for the lanterns and flashlights. That's about it. We have a stock of 5-gallon water jugs for our water cooler, so we are good there. My car is gassed up as well.
The only difference I see this time is that its colder outside than when Irene it. I hope the temps don't get too cold if we lose power.

Re: Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
If it looks like its going to be a direct hit, we are going to try to sandbag the basement windows this time. We didn't for Irene and had about a foot of water down there.
I also fill my car up with gas and then park it a few blocks from my house (out of the flood zone).
We always have flashlights, food and water so we are good there, I am going to pick up some non perishable milk for DD just in case.

It's definitely easier in certain parts of Queens vs living on LI. We are on the 7th floor so we don't have to worry about flooding.

If I may... make sure you have a comfortable set up for yourself incase you need to wind up sleeping on a floor or in a strange space. It sounds odd, but, I was pretty pregnant during hurricane irene and wound up down in the basement and at the time I remember thinking "damn, I didn't plan this out well" - I had no pillows, etc.
ETA I just remembered you live in an apt, lol. Nevermind. but maybe this will help someone else that's pregnant!

Re: Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
Most important to me is: Secure anything that can blow away outside.
Next: Drain the water off the pool cover. Hunt down the flashlights from under children's beds. Make sure I have batteries just in case kids have drained batteries. Download a good book & charge kindle. Head to the library for kids books. Figure out where Jenga game is. Charge cell phone. Case of water. Things to eat that don't require electricity but can be cooked on BBQ.

I wasn't thinking when I went grocery shopping this morning. Last time we lost power for a few days. Guess we better get eating!
I did make hotel ressies that I can cancel up until 6pm on Monday night if need be. Didn't want to be shut out from a pet friendly place if a tree should fall on my house
Oh, and my little tip is to put important papers inside plastic bags in the dishwasher, and photo albums and important pictures in rubbermaid containers.

Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
I don't go crazy, just make sure there's enough food in the house to cook for a couple of days.
I top off the gas in my car
Have a car charger for my phone so that is always charged.
Make sure the grill has gas
The yard is closed for the season so there's nothing out there I've got to worry about blowing around, but if that wasn't the case put anything away that might blow around.

I don't stock up at all. The only thing I will do this time is make sure I have water, formula and food for my DS. For Irene I lost power for a week so any food I would have bought would hav egone bad anyway. We will eat out if it happens again.

Same here. We did all of these things for Irene and are glad we did. Although we were spared, many of our neighbors had flooded basements. And thank God that hit at low tide. Had it been high tide, we would have not been as lucky.
Other than that, we'll just make sure to have plenty of food and bottled water available for us and the kids.

The only things I do are to make sure we have plenty of bottled water & batteries, plus I get some cash and gas up both cars. Plus we put our patio furniture in the basement. That's really it. I always have plenty of formula & baby food and when we lost power during Hurricane Irene, it was easier to eat out.
