Adopting a Sandy Family
I've decided to adopt a family who has lost everything due to Hurricane Sandy. I found an organization that gave me the name of a family, and they have a goal of raising $1,000. I've been asking some family to help me with the donation, and I'm getting responses like, "So you want me to help a stranger?" or, "My daughter lost everything." And I get how they feel, but I just really wanted to do something to help someone, and now $1,000 is sounding unrealistic. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can make this happen?? TIA

Maybe you can buy something and raffle it off, or get a business to donate something.
$1,000 is a lot to expect one person to raise for a family. I think they would have more luck asking for gifts, gift cards, food, toiletries, household goods, etc.
Good luck!

I would try to raise what you can and leave it at that. Or try to find some place else that is helping Sandy people and donate there, especially the items like the previous poster mentioned.
It's a tough month for a lot of people, especially with the holidays. Don't take it personally.

That is a lot of money. What is the name of the organization?

I can see what they are thinking by setting that as a goal.
It is a lot of money to raise or donate, but as someone who lost a lot in the storm, I can tell you that the costs to recover are enormous and go beyond the imagination.
Most people do have insurance but there are deductibles, exclusions, and various incidentals that add up. Plus due to the magnitude of the storm it is taking insurance companies a lot of time even to send advances so people are shelling out thousands in the meantime.
This organization probably just wants to ensure that the donation will really make an impact on those affected.
OP, I think it's wonderful that you are doing this. To answer your question, I would reach out to people you might know outside of the metropolitan area who were not affected the way we were. So many people here were affected that many just might not be able to give much this year, but if you have friends or family out of the area, maybe they can help more.
I would just use social media to get the word out plus like another poster said get businesses to donate. Do you have any items you can ebay and donate the profits from?
Thank you for doing this.
