A Movie about Infertility, Pregnancy, Birth- Help Us with an Ending
I am doing research for a project. Please resolve a dispute for me.
There is a movie script focused around one couples struggles of infertility, pregnancy, and birth (think of it styled like "Knocked Up"). We are in the process of hammering out the ending.
The couple struggles to get pregnant, after trials and tribulations succeed only to encounter pregnancy/birth complications. Baby is born earlier than anticipated.
Would you be satisfied if movie ends as mom is holding baby for the first time in the NeoNatal Intensive Care Unit?
We are also considering a possible throwaway scene during the credits showing the family in the future with everyone healthy and happy.
Also in consideration is ending with a fast forward as the family brings home the baby for the first time.
Thank you for your opinions! If you have strong feelings in any direction please comment below.

A Movie about Infertility, Pregnancy, Birth- Help Us with an Ending
As one who has gone through the infertility journey I think it should end with bringing home baby and like the others said the credits with baby growing up. We first asked when the infertility doc when the bast time to tell family and he said when you bring home the baby, jokingly.... but in my heart I wish we could....

I agree. NICU is a very medical, scary place. A baby in the NICU is not necessarily "success"... Some babies will live there, only to succumb to a syndrome. I think of all the babies that are allowed to be held by parents as they die.. If you want the ending to be "happy", show clips of a good future.
There is enough association between infertility and unhealthy kids, we never told my in laws that we conceived through IVF.

I wrote a detailed FM to you but will share some of it here as well.
NICU babies secondary to premature births are on the rise. Statistically speaking women who need infertility treatments are older. Older women have more complications hence more premature births. Fertility treatments lead to more multiple births which are typically premature births.
Yes, I am a NICU mom and NICU moms are in their own "club". It's a very scary time.
I just strongly feel that having the movie end up with a baby going to a well baby nursery is a "hollywood ending" although yes, plenty of women who underwent fertility treatments have this kind of ending. The NICU is raw but real. A NICU ending can also be a bit of a cliffhanger until the credits when you show all the major milestones in the first year. (first smile, first, crawl, first time eating mashed up peas...bleh..., first steps, first birthday).
People relate to movies. If a woman who had infertility treatments who is pregnant is watching the movie, she may think, hmmmm, I may have a preemie. On her way to the hospital in preterm labor she may possibly recall the movie and have just a tiny bit less fear because in the end, it typically works out just fine.
Part of this may be bias. Maybe I want all the NICU moms to be heard. It often it turns out ok as is planned for your movie.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Re: A Movie about Infertility, Pregnancy, Birth- Help Us with an Ending
I would hate if the movie ended in the NICU with no follow up. There is so much uncertainty for my many babies in the NICU. I would like to see the family bring the baby home (fine if it's after a NICU stay), then see the baby growing up during the credits.
As someone who went through IF, nothing feels more real than the moment you are home with your healthy baby and no longer dealing with the medical end of things (if you are lucky enough to have that ending...I know not all are).
