Need a race to motivate me
I can't do the winter run series because of DH's work schedule (as an aside..... He went from part time after over a year to FULL TIME!!!! but now that means my schedule is even more limited for runs!)
I have lost my motivation for running. It's a cross between being limited to run either in the cold at 4:30am, or on the treadmill (I can't run more than 3 miles on there without wishing I would just die of boredom), as well as the stress of being a first year teacher in the most difficult class, most difficult district, working under a difficult principal who wants so much from me, running time has become lesson plan and development time. I can't even shut it off to do more than an hour workout, so I have fallen in love with weight training (and love the results!) but I want to rekindle my love for running. The only way I can do that is by keeping my goals on a race. Mentally, I need that.
The half marathon is too far away, and truth be told, those long runs are just not happening. So I am going to opt for the 10k this year. I don't want to lose my oomph all together because I'm afraid I will turn into someone who "used" to run. I know this is temporary, and I'm already planning to do less this summer so I can train for ether the diva or entenmanns next fall, and then really wanted to do the Philly half this year before I turn (gasp) 40... My inlaws live near there and I always wanted to do it!
Also, I decided years ago that when I turn 40, if we can afford to do this, I wanted to try to do a Disney marathon, or half if I'm not trained up yet. I have less than a year to plan for that to make that goal....
So, would the Kings Park 15k be a good one to train for? Julie, I know you love that run, but I know it's also hilly and you messed up your knee on that one. I won't be running like a rocket the way you do though
I love hills, and live in Northport so I might be more motivated to train and hit up those hills. If I were to do it, I would love some kind of training guide to work with, so if anyone has advice, that would be welcome!
Thanks for letting me vent.
The ironic thing is, because of the weight training, I look like I'm in the best shape of my life (well, in my 30's ) but I don't feel it because I lost the run mojo I used to have!

Re: Need a race to motivate me
I was actually about to write something really similiar. I am a third year teacher in a low income school with a principal who is crazy. Literally she told us that if we don't do what she says- our life depends on it. But I digress.
Anyway, the KP 15k is one of my favorite races. Since you live in Northport, it might not be too bad since you can train with hills. Last weekend I did part of the course and one hill is 1.5 miles long.
I don't have a training schedule to share but the race is nice and it is fun. You get a nice sweatshirt. They offer good treats afterwards and even a free message.
Good luck and try not to lose your mojo!

Re: Need a race to motivate me
The Kings Park 15K is great! I loved that race last year... though I've heard rumors that they were changing the course for this year (not sure if that's true or not). And it's for a great cause (the money is donated to brain tumor- related charities). I hope the tendonitis in my foot eases up enough by March so I can do it this year.

I just got the entry in the mail today and it doesn't say anything about a new course - It does say "The Challenge Continues." So hopefully it is the same.
I have NYCHM the next week and I'm debating it.
