Expectations at the Mall Play area?

When you go with your child, do you get annoyed if the kids start running around screeching or do you think it's par for the course?

I was at the mall w/my kids today & my son & another little girl (both between 3 & 4) were running around screeching & having an absolute ball together and another mom with a little one (about a year) kept flinching, covering her ears & shooting them/me dirty looks. This went on (on & off) for about 3-4 minutes, but it wasn't constant screeching. I correct my son for a lot of things & make sure that he's polite & plays nice with the other kids, but I didn't feel like I had intervene on this one (other than a "Ssh" after one particularly loud yell)...they were kids in a kids play area. Now that I'm thinking back on it though I'm wondering, should I have? Or do you think that the mom was being a bit unreasonable given that it was a playground?

Unreasonable.

My two biggest pet peeves about mall play areas are:

- sick kids (what is it about those places? is that where you bring your sick kid when you're bored at home? Chat Icon )

and

- rowdy kids who are WAY too old to be in those play areas

Loud preschool age kids wouldn't bother me at all.

I agree completely. That mom is in for a rude awakening if she thinks her child is going to stay quiet forever.

I say, letting them let off a little steam gets you a few extra minutes in the mall to get your errands done. Let them have a good time!! Better they do that at the mall than your living room!! Chat Icon

Thanks so much ladies! I felt the same way, but I always try to be objective. I had a feeling that she was being a bit dramatic, but on the other hand, I don't want to be one of those "not my kid" parents Chat Icon

I kept thinking that she's in for a rude awakening too! I said to my dh that I'd love to see her there in 2 years when her son is doing the same thing so that I can do the same thing to her...I'll bet her tune has changed by then! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree. They should be able in a play area, to do just that...play. That said, perhaps, she had a headache, was up all night, who knows! If it was really loud, magnified by it being in a mall, it could have been annoying to her.

Also, if her kid was just a year old, it may have been her first, and she isn't aware yet of how it is to have a loud, crazy 3-4 year old who runs around yelling, LOL! She may have also been looking at it like these kids are gonna take out my little 1 year old running around? I wouldn't let it bother you. Your kid was being a kid...she will realize it when her kid grows a little!

I agree & would like to add one more:

- Parents who get annoyed at the older kids when their kids are too young to be playing in there.

When my ds was that little I took him there, but if the kids were older or too rowdy for me we either left or I kept him off to the side. I never got annoyed at the other kids since the play area is really for the kids that are mobile.

Expectations at the Mall Play area?

It's a play area designed for children. Children are loud. If she wanted quiet time she should have stayed home or gone to the library.

Yep that sums it up for me too.

Its an indoor play area .. for kids.. Kids play they scream they play. Maybe she had a mirgraine? Who knows? But you can't chastise the kids.

Just out of curiosity, what is the age range for that play area? Every time I go to sunrise mall I look in there and it always seems to be filled with older kids. Is there a posted age range? I have twin 20 month olds who are very active crazy climbers. but I wouldn't put them in there because it seems like the kids are much bigger than them like double and triple their size.

Re: Expectations at the Mall Play area?

I would think those play places are for kids under 5, maybe 6... There is no age limit at the one I go to. There use to be a height limit too. They took it down...It isn't much fun for older kids... But I always see them in there. I jut pull DS out when they get rowdy. He has been knocked down before...

THIS exactly. i hate when older kids are running around like maniacs.

If DS was screaching or screaming very loud and being annoying, I would probably warn him to be a bit quieter. but it is a mall play area, not a library.

I have always felt the same way.

Many of the kids I've seen in there are in teh 8 - 10 year old range, I think.

Waaaaaaay bigger than all the stuff in there, hanging upside down by their feet, etc.

I think this is about right. I never noticed any signs, but I just assume they're really for kids about 2-6. I didn't start bringing ds until he was about 1 1/2 and at the beginning I'd keep him separate or, if that was impossible, I'd leave if the kids were being too rowdy for my comfort.

I usually see an under 5 crowd at Sunrise, but occasionally there are older kids. When I got there the other day there were three 8 or 9 year olds jumping off of the big hill/slide thing in the middle. Normally I don't mind that, but it was packed with little ones & they almost landed on a few. They weren't there w/little siblings so I was kind of Chat Icon at why their parents didn't take them out...it was a little dangerous...
