Eczema moms, advice please
A little background: DD had a little eczema over the summer. The ped said to apply lotion every day, we did, and it just spread and got worse. Since it had developed after I had put a little sunscreen on her for the first time, I thought it could be related. I stopped using any lotion and it went away completely.
I just noticed a few spots starting to develop again. Ped suggested slathering her with lotion a few times a day. I put lotion on her last night and this morning and by tonight she had splotches everywhere and a few spots on her arms that looked pretty bad. After her bath tonight, I put a different lotion on bc I didn't want to leave her with nothing but I'm not sure what to do. Would you try cutting out the lotion again? Do you think I just need a different brand? I plan to cut back from bathing her every other day, so I'm wondering if I should not lotion her for the next day or two to see if it gets better. I had been using aveeno so maybe I should pick up something else. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Eczema moms, advice please
This is what we do and sometimes she still has breakouts...we have an apt with the dermo tomorrow
Bath at least every other day or every 2 days if we're home and don't go out We use aveeno lotion for eczema but switch it up with aquaphor
I would probably switch the lotion but not give it up

Definitely cut down on the baths. DS had horrible eczema and still does. And try to keep the baths short. DS always got a bad breakout when he was teething for some reason too.

keep baths short - in and out.
we used arbonne's ABC line. Its a wash and lotion. It cleared my son's eczema up in 3 days. no perfumes, dyes, etc.
also use free and clear laundry detergent. no fabric softener. and again, bounce free dryer sheets.
have u gotten him tested for allergies?

Re: Eczema moms, advice please
Cut down on baths.
Cerave cream after bath
Oil them up before baths, so the there is a barrier
And most important, use the 1% steriods before it gets bad.. my pediatric derm said, its totally safe and its better use the steriods that letting them scratch it and turn into a scar or thicker layer of eczema
Moisturize skin as much as possible..
Goodluck! I know its hard but I've been able to curb my DD's eczema with this strict skin regiment.

Eucerin Calming Cream...works the best for my dd Aquafor is great too but its so greasy for all over the body.
I use aveeno eczema lotion its ok.
It sounds like the lotion is irritating the eczema, I would switch to something else.
I've been usign aveeno ecsema oatmeal bath it seems to sooth it.

Eczema moms, advice please
Hmmm. My derm has given us different advice than most PPs. She recommended baths every day if we can (usually it is every other day). The baths add moisture to the skin. They key is keeping it in after DC is out of the bath- for that you need to blot the skin (don't rub) and then apply a thick cream or oil. i tend to use coconut or olive oil, but I know some ppl use Eucerin or Cerave. Sometimes I use eucerin after the oil. If you don't moisturize after, the eczema will get worse. The derm also told us never to use lotion- it is not thick enough and most contain alcohols which are drying. Make sure that neither the soap you are using nor the lotion contain any fragrances. Also, make sure DC isn't sitting in the soap during a bath- do playing first, and wash right before he/she gets out.

Re: Eczema moms, advice please
I just took my DD to a ped. derm last week.
He said to wash her with Dove soap. Do quick baths (she's in school, so, I bathe her daily). He called in an Rx for her and I just picked up (took a week to get it in..another story with the pharmacy). I'm starting it tonight and really hoping it helps.

I was reading info on the national eczema foundation's site last night and it recommended daily short baths followed by cream or ointment. I was surprised bc I always heard the opposite!
Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll try a cetafyl or cerave cream and see how things go.
One last question, what kind of shampoo do you use? DD always has some yellow flakes on her scalp which I hadn't realized can be eczema too.

I have boys so I just use the same all natural olive oil soap I use on their skin... But for myself, (and I have senstitive skin too), I use tea tree oil shampoo. Our pediatrician recommends head and shoulders for babies! This can help cradle cap (if that's what is on her scalp) as well as eczema.
