A lesson I think women in particular need to learn

I've been getting myself down about hovering around the 170 mark after losing 80 pounds, that I'm not getting lower weights for weeks now.

But I've been doing the Insanity workout and have been trying to concentrate on the changes I see rather than the number. Then I saw the below graphic on Pinterest today which helped put it in perspective for me.

It's just a number. I look better at 172 now than I did at 172 a month ago. Just thought some of you might be feeling the same, and that this might help you as well. Chat Icon

It's so true!!! I've learned this through the years- you can't go by the number on the scale. A lot of times I look better heavier- I seem to have more muscle tone, I look leaner, etc.

I had gained around 5lbs training for my first half and while I was upset at first I also took into account that I was in the best shape of my life. I felt better physically in what I had accomplished, than ever before- just proof that the scale isn't so important. I'm in better athletic shape when I'm heavier!!

Absolutely!

First off - congratulations on the weight loss! You look fantastic!

As a Beachbody Coach, I always tell people that they scale is a guideline but listen to your body. Muscle weighs more than fat and if you take a look at the big picture, that number may not have budged but the results of all the hard work is absolutely noticeable.

You know what though, that "muscle weighs more than fat" idea was something I used to use to justify being overweight. Chat Icon I didn't really think I was muscular per se, I was just fooling myself. I try not to make excuses for anything anymore.

So in my quest for my body to be fit, I've realized it's taken just as long for my mind to acclimate to being fit. It's a powerful thing! It allowed me to ignore my weight problem for years Chat Icon

I don't own a scale. When I get weighed at the dr. once a year, that is the only time I have any number. I go by how I look and how my clothes fit.

when I found out I was diabetic I was 91lbs

I put back on so much muscle- I wear the same size jeans I used to wear at 125 - at my current weight which is much much higher - (ok 18lbs more)

I am trying not to focus my weight- but rather getting a 6 pack

I know my doctor wont be happy with the number on the scale at my next appointment- it really hasn't changed much in the last year- but my body looks completely different

...and this is why I don't like WW. They focus on the # on the scale. I don't care what anyone says - that's the bottom line with them. They focus on you standing on that scale each week.

It is a great post! Definitely thought provoking and provides a good perspective.

I completely agree that scale obsession is no good. There is so much more to being fit and being healthy than just the number on the scale. And a healthy weight can vary depending on many factors - height, age, build (large frame/small frame), percentage of muscle v. fat, lifestyle, etc.

But I also think, when following a program designed for weight LOSS (as opposed to someone who is just looking to get more fit or eat healthier) -- whether it's WW or MFP or Jenny Craig or whatever -- it makes sense to track progress by tracking weight. How else can weight loss be tracked? WW doesn't really make it all about the number on the scale... there is a lot of focus on getting healthy activity/exercise, eating a healthy, well-rounded diet, and celebration of "non-scale victories." But let's face it, most of us who are there choose to be there because we WANT to move the number on the scale, so I appreciate the weigh-ins and the accountability. For me, it's motivation.

And the weigh-ins aren't done in a punitive way. They are private, and a member sets their own weight loss goal within what's considered the healthy range for their height and gender. I am 5' 7", and the healthy range at WW is something like 128 lbs to 160 lbs, so it's quite range. And they allow members to get a doctor's note to set a goal higher, if it makes sense for that person (say if a doctor felt that 165 lbs was a healthy weight for a particular 5' 7" woman). So it's not one-size, fits all, and not focused on getting to a certain number. There is acknowledgment that a healthy weight can vary. And also the weigh-ins are weekly, and they discourage weighing yourself more than that, which is what a lot of scale obsessed people do (daily or more than daily weighing!). And the weight loss is designed to be gradual, so there's not crazy expectations about how much you should be losing (fractions of a lb are common on WW).

So I don't think the number on the scale is totally meaningless, but I also don't think it's the be all/end all. Everyone who is making efforts to make healthy changes should feel good about themselves and celebrate every accomplishment - be it more energy, more muscle, the ability to walk 1 mile longer or start running, the effort to eat more unprocessed foods, our clothes fitting more loosely, inches lost....
