Eating to FEEL (not look) better? - I need some help!

Ok, admitedly it's a bonus if I end up looking better b/c I could stand to lose a good 30 lbs - but I am tired of feeling gross.

I have a completely open mind.
I just need to make a change.

I think I've been going about this all wrong - trying to look better (lose weight) but I don't really FEEL any better b/c I'm still eating crap -

I know I have to put some effort into this, but honestly, I have a full time job in Manhattan, an exec. husband who works 6 am - 8 pm and 1.5 and 3.5 year old boys - there's really not a whole lot of time for me to take care of me .........
So the simplier the better !!

and I get so damn overwhelmed b/c you THINK you're eating something good for you - then you read the label and see the 2nd or 3rdf ingredient is freakin' sugar !!

Can anoyone recc a good website, blog or book where I can start?

I don't have any recommendations on what to read, and I am DEFINITELY not an expert on good eating.

But I try to just focus on eating less processed or unprocessed foods.... so things like fruits, vegetables, whole grains (oats, barley), lean meats, beans, eggs, dairy, etc. as much as possible. I think that's a good start. You mentioned reading labels ... but I think minimizing the role of packaged foods in your diet could be a good first step. I know it's hard because they are convenient, but you could start small and just do things like snacking on fresh fruit and a piece of cheese rather than a snack "product." The same idea as when articles on good nutrition advise people to "shop the perimeter" of the grocery store, not the middle aisles.

I also think eating the plainest version of products is usually the best... so swap out flavored yogurt for plain and then add your own fruit, or buy plain oatmeal instead of flavored packets. Those are examples of easy swaps you can make to things you may already eat.

Then, once you get used to that, you can step it up a bit more. But I think gradual changes are less overwhelming and seem more do-able than drastic ones. Maybe you are already doing these things and it's way too simplistic, so I apologize if I am stating the obvious!

You're right - this is probably a good place for me to start to get my act together w/o getting overwhelmed
Thanks!

Re: Eating to FEEL (not look) better? - I need some help!

100 days of real food!

link

lierally has changed my life Chat Icon it's been about a month and i feel so much better. i'm also a FTWM and have little to no time to cook weekdays, always running out the door in the morning so never prepare for lunch, etc. This blog focuses on eating real whole foods and cutting out the processed junk. Go to the weekly pledges and that's how i started. I just focused on changing one thing a week (some weeks i skipped things because i already do them) what a difference! at first it was very time consuming in the food store - but each week it gets a little easier as i use similar items and don't have to do research. Similar to WW - once you know the points its easy to shop - kwim?

as for fitting it all in, i think it comes down to planning. Once a week i plan out my menu for the week. I plan on cooking on a sunday, using leftovers during the week, and plan meals that i know will be quick during the week (whole wheat pasta, breakfast food, quesadillas, shrimp & couscous, homemade pizza etc). If i'm cooking one weeknight i try to make enough so i will have leftovers. If you don't have a crockpot definitely invest, it is a lifesaver! for instance i made a whole chicken in the crockpot and it was delicious. That's easily something i can do once a week and throw together a quick side when i get home. I like it so much i'm thinking of getting a dual crockpot so i can make a main meal and side lol! i made homemade granola that was super easy and lasted two weeks - its breakfast every day.

some days are easier than others, but overall its working out and i'm happy i changed my lifestyle.

I completely agree with planning. It is a definite investment of time -- sometimes I spend a few hours, all said in done, in a day planning meals, making my shopping list, shopping, putting it away, and prepping items, but then it makes the rest of the week flow so much more smoothly. And it cuts out the stress of thinking about what to make/eat when you are tired at the end of a long work day, and makes it less likely that you will go for takeout food or eat out.

I think cooking meals at home the majority of the time is really key, whether you are trying to eat healthier or lose weight or both, because then you k now exactly what is in what you are eating and you can adjust (cut salt, add veggies, swap out items) as necessary.

Another make ahead item that comes together pretty quickly but is healthy, tasty, and kid-friendly is baked oatmeal with fruit (bananas and blueberries, bananas and pumpkin). There are a few recipes on SkinnyTaste and I've been making it once a week and cutting into squares to have for breakfast. It's really filling and satisfying, and all of the ingredients are "real food" (oatmeal, fruit, honey, cinnamon, milk...).

I also make a lot of quiches or crustless quiches with eggs and whatever veggies, cheeses, etc. I have lying around. They are great to make ahead and even freeze individual slices to use as a breakfast or lunch or dinner (with a side salad or soup or something).

Also agree that the slow cooker is a life saver. It's only me, Dh, and our 4 year old, so the recipes I make in a slow cooker usually make a lot of leftovers (that I have for lunch or other dinners).

And since I am on the go for real estate a lot, I am trying to always remember to pack a few healthy snacks in the car -- stuff like a portable piece of fruit, almonds, cheese, etc.
