Breast feeding newborns
Do you set an alarm during the night to wake up and feed them every three hours? Dd is two weeks old and that's what I've been doing but last night I was so tired I must have forgotten and she gave me almost 5 hours before waking up for a feeding. Can I feed he every three hours during the day and let her wake me when she's ready at night?

Breast feeding newborns
How old? Pretty early on my ped told us to wake every 3 hours during the day and every 5 hours at night to breast feed. He said that if she's going to give you 5 hours, don't mess with that!!!

Breast feeding newborns
I never woke DD and she slept longer stretches then than she does now at 10 months! As long as you get in 8-12 feeding in a 24 hour period I would let her sleep. Enjoy!

Re: Breast feeding newborns
As long as they are gaining weight fine then I would let them decide when they are hungry. I never woke them to feed them. If they are having weight issues then I would stick to reminding them to eat.

Re: Breast feeding newborns
Has your DD regained her birth weight and some more? You should really talk to your ped. I was letting DS sleep for as long as 4-5 hours at night at 3 weeks old. My ped made me feel so guilty because DS hasn't gained much weight at 3 weeks. I had to suck it up and feed him every 2 hours around the clock. At his next check up he gained enough weight and the ped gave me the okay to sleep at night.

I agree with what others are saying as long as your baby is putting on weight I would let him sleep.

Re: Breast feeding newborns
I never woke my kids at night. I just made sure I was feeding them through out the day every 2-3 hours. My first DS never slept more then 3 hours during the night anyway. My second DS would make it 5 hours, and I let him sleep.
As long as they are gaining weight, don't wake them.

Re: Breast feeding newborns
As long as she is gaining weight, I wouldn't wake a newborn. My DD at that point was usually getting up 3-4 hours at night, but sometimes, even earlier than 2 weeks, she would give me a 5 hour stretch. I never set an alarm to wake myself up. I remember waking up and my boobs were so fill and I was worried that I slept through her cries LOL.
But yeah as long as not a premie and no weight issues, I would nurse every 3 hours during the wake, and let her sleep as long as she wants during the night!

Re: Breast feeding newborns
As long as she is gaining, I wouldn't wake her. I made the mistake of waking my son every 2 hrs, as per the suggestion of the LC. My son got used to that and literally nursed every 1 1/2-2 hrs for almost 3 months. It was exhausting. I did have an amazing supply because of it, but extremely exhausting. I didnt get more than 1 1/2 sleep at a time for the first few months.

Re: Breast feeding newborns
I was always told as long as baby is healthy Do Not wake them at night. Only wake them during the day. Sometimes DS goes 5 hours and that's fine by me.

Re: Breast feeding newborns
I woke DD for the first week or so until she gained her birth weight back & then I let her (and myself) sleep. She started with 4 hours stretches at night, then 5 hrs, then 6-7hrs & then was STTN at around 5 weeks. As long as she is gaining weight/making pee & poo diapers, if she is letting u sleep, enjoy it!!!

Re: Breast feeding newborns
I think for the first few weeks I did- I wanted to make sure my supply got well-established, adn baby was latching properly. I heard it can take up to 4 weeks to be fully in, so for 4 weeks, I did set my alarm and wake up every 3 hours. My LO is almost 10 months old, and we're still going strong! If you're not going to wake LO maybe you should pump in the beginning- this way you'll build up a healthy supply.
