Breast feeding moms of newborns
If you entirely breast feed are you staying away from nuts, shellfish, eggs, other high allergy foods? When would you start eating them again?

Nope, no reason to stay away from any foods. Even sushi and soft cheeses are okay for you again. The only thing you want to stay away from are certain medications and copious amounts of alcohol.
Congratulations and good luck!

No, not at all! I eat everything, except known foods that I know will be gassy for the baby, like broccoli, beans, hot dogs, cabbage, etc.

Unless there is a family history of allergy, there's no need to avoid any food. Although, you may notice that your baby may not react well to certain foods you eat. I'd recommend just keeping at least a mental note of what you eat each day, so you may be able to notice any pattern in baby's fussiness, poop, gassiness, etc. Otherwise, enjoy everything!

I can't say what's right or wrong, but I personally ate everything when breastfeeding. Including sushi, alchohol, and chocolate. However, I am not recommending this. The only thing I stayed away from was really gassy vegetbales or beans...they bother me so I figure its not worth it if its going to potentially bother LO and its going to make me fart anyway.

Re: Breast feeding moms of newborns
My dh is allergic to ALL nuts, I have been bf'ing for 5 months and eating nuts. I was told there was no reason for me to avoid them and that it may be beneficial to the baby to help with the antibodies.

Even those foods might not make the baby gassy. Definitely experiment and see before you cut them out. You could be lucky!!!!
My twins on the other hand... I have limited dairy and WAY limited veggies. Does not really matter what kind

Re: Breast feeding moms of newborns
I did not stay away from anything but for the 1st 7wks I did go ligter on the dairy, but we thought he might have had an allergy. He did but it was to his diapers not the dairy
Newer research is showing that bfing moms who eat higher allergy foods are actually doing more good because baby is getting antibodys. I was told that if I did not have an allergy to anyting not to alter my diet while pg or nursing. I was also told that if we did not have a fmaily hx of allergies to not wait to introduce allergy foods either. With Emmy we introduced meats, shellfish, peanuts, berries, cheese/yogurt all before 1 yr. With Sawyer, who is 4 months, I plan to wait a bit because he does have eczema and that can be an indicator of possible food allergies.

Re: Breast feeding moms of newborns
I am pumping since my son is still in the NICU. He was born 9 weeks premature due to me having preeclampsia. The lactation consultant said I could eat everything again. She even recommended that I have a beer a night to stimulate milk production. She asked me if there were any food allergies on either side and because there are none she told me I can eat everything nuts, chocolate, caffeine, cheeses, etc. She told me nothing is off limits. My lactaton consultant actually happens to be my neighbor so I completely trust her.
