Competitive schools on LI

Are districts on LI very competitive? I live in the bayside/douglaaton/little neck area and I don't like the competition and pressure. I know it's important in life to succeed but my kids and I are stressed out. My DD asked to go to Kumon cause all her friends go. Would it be any different if we lived on LI?

We moved from that area. It is SO competitive and a lot of the kids are pushed, it's the culture in a sort of way. We moved to an area of LI that is a bit competitive but not like Bayside. We are in the Plainview district. We want challenging and we want to push our kids, but not like that.

Eta how old are your kids?

They are in 4 th and 2 nd grades. Older dd is in G&T and she has been crying this week and is feeling the pressure more than ever. Her report card was very good though. The one middle school we are zoned for is also very tough I hear. I am a single mom so they don't have another parent here to support with hw help etc. I can only do so much. I'm not sure how we are going to make it into middle school!! I should move.

G&T in that area is very competitive, it sounds like your daughter is doing very well grade wise. Would you consider putting her in gen Ed? It's such great district, and her grades will come much easier without having to move Chat Icon I would suggest tutoring but I know it's crazy expensive

Re: Competitive schools on LI

I live in Sayville. I have not seen a terrific amount of pressure or undo stress on the kids YET.

Elementary was a breeze. My older son is in Middle School and he is in the SEED program (they don't have honors in 6th grade.. just enrichment). In order to qualify for the honors program in 7th grade, the kids must be on honor roll for 3 consecutive quarters. They all know it but there is no inside pressure. In fact.. Robbie had a 93 average last quarter and I was irritated with him NOT because of the cumulative GPA.. but because he only got an 80 in math. The kid is a Mathlete and a Math Olympiad and the 80 was due to pure laziness (missing homework, lackluster scores on his spiral reviews which are take home tests). He told his counselor that he was disappointed in the 93 and the counselor was like "That's a great score! I'd give my son a party if that was his GPA!" lol

BUT there are competitive elements in some regard. The requirements for admission to NJHS in my gf's district is that the kids have an 85 or higher for 4 consecutive quarters.. but in our district I am told that kids must have a 95 average for 4 consecutive quarters.. that's pretty difficult.

Upshot.. depends on the district. I mean.. 3 Village is super competitive.. while Bay Shore is more relaxed. In my own opinion, the level of stress is actually more from parents than from teachers with school districts out here..

It is a tough situation. You must be so proud of your daughter. Alot of kids in the city do kumon. I think you should send her just so she doesn't feel like she is falling behind

Sorry, but this is the most ridiculous thing I've heard. Her daughter is in G&T and she should push her even MORE and put her in Kumon? Mind boggling. Whatever happened to people being happy with just having average kids?

I don't think it is ridiculous at all. There is nothing wrong with having average kids but her daughter is in a special program and to stay at the level of her peers in this program she may need to go to kumon. If her daughter no longer wants to be in a G&T setting then that is different

I have heard that about Syosset - Jericho too.

Jericho is also extremely competitive. In fact b/c it is so small itmay be even more competitive than Syosset if that's possible.
