One year old who gags and worse... each time we try anything more solid than yogurt.. HELP

Our little man is having issues with transitioning to solids. He just turned 13 months, age adjusted he is only 11.5 months. His twin sister will eat anything, I mean anything, and we can't get him to have more than his bottles and things like baby fruits and yogurt. Each time we have tried to give him stage 3 baby food, he will gag and then force himself to vomit. Has anyone else been thru this? Any suggestions? He is taking 4 bottles, and 2.5 - 3 yogurts daily. Thanks for any suggestionsChat Icon Chat Icon

One year old who gags and worse... each time we try anything more solid than yogurt.. HELP

My DS hated going from stage 2-3. It took forever to get himused to the texture. I honestly stopped trying for a bit...which was not good. I should have just kept trying in little bits or gone straight to table food at that point. He also would not eat table food. I finally just decided I would stop the purees and only do table food and little by little he came around and now he shovels food in.

DS never threw up but spit it all out.

I never gave stage 3 I went straight to table food. I would start with something small like pastina in chicken broth. Does he like to snack I used to make DS penne pasta & let him hold in his hand.

DD gags on the stage 3 too! She won't go near them. She'll eat table food though. I pretty much just stopped trying the stage 3.

DON'T give stage 3...A lot of babies can't handle the different textures. Try steamed veggies cut up into very small pieces. Small pieces of chicken and turkey is good too.. Try pasta... Give it time, he will get use to the regular table food.

Stage 3 is very difficult to manage because it has mixed textures. It's sensory over load for their mouths. He probably has a very sensitive gag reflex and it hasnt moved far enough back yet on his tounge. Try different textures ie/ soft: pumpkin bread/banana bread or crunchier: Dr. Pragers patties cooked well in the oven. Look for patterns in what he can tolerate and what causes the gagging/vomiting. My DD was like this and I had to really work on the sensory aspect of feeding. It can be stressfull but try and make feeding fun. Prior to feedings you can take a wash cloth and gently rub the inside of his cheeks or get a starter tooth brush and roll it around on each cheek and try and swipr his tounge a few times with it. There is actually a protocol for this ad typically uses a "nuk" brush. Also let him play with the food and feel it on his hands. HTH.....

I also have twins & one of them was having issues. We had to get feeding therapy thru early intervention to work with him. He is fine now at 17 months. SHe also advised to NOT GIVE stage 3 foods because of mixed textures as stated above. Why not call early intervention for a consult & if nothing else...will give you some tips

How about trying applesauce..they come in flavors & also a chunky applesauce if you want to try texture. This is how we started with therapy

My answer would also be to try early intervention. My 18/16 month old twins have been receiving pt. for over a year. Also, not to try stage 3. Just table food.

What about trying to mix some pastina into his purees. That would let him get used to a different textured but at least it's a consistent texture.

Neither one of my boys liked Stage 3. HAve you smelled them?...they make me gag too Chat Icon I know it feels like you don't have a lot of options but just kep trying diff soft tables foods. Mashed potatoes, mushy bananas, puffs...just things to try diff textures. Good luck, I know how frustrating it can be!

DS 1 had the same issue - he gagged and threw up with anything that had texture that was fed to him via spoon (stage 3 foods, pastina). It was kind of like he was expecting a puree and was surprised and unprepared when it wasn't.

I would try finger foods with him (cut up banana, avocado, cheerios etc) and let him feed himself and get used to the texture. It made a huge difference with my DS.

ETA - DS 2 is like your DD - he'll eat anything and everything, no issues with texture, taste, etc. The only thing he doesn't like is cheerios - which were the only thing DS 1 would eat table food wise for awhile.
