My 6 year old son has SPD and goes to OT 2x a week for it. We are having difficulty at home with him regarding his behavior. He is extremely disrespectful, rude, has temper tantrums etc. I really think it's time to see someone. We live in Jericho so would love someone close by. Please let me know if you have a fantastic recommendation for me. Thanks so much!

Re: Child Psychologist

What about going through the school district? I initially had DS evaluated privately by a psychologist, and even with insurance, it was still an expensive co-pay. It would be difficult to pay for if we had him seen on an ongoing basis privately.

He gets SEIT services now through the district and has made a HUGE improvement.

We will probably do away with services for next year.

With SEIT, I know they can also come to work with your DC at home.

I ended up taking my son to stony brook they have a great behavioral program there. The downside he had to stay 30days but we got a psychiatrist and therapy afterwards, he's on meds now for adhd and odd he's improved at least50percent but still is very disrespectful. Takes a lot of energy and time

Re: Child Psychologist

I took my 6 year old to NYU's dept of Child Study. Personally I would recommend going to a larger organization (like StonyBrook, NYU, NorthShore LIJ). I spoke to many local independent psychologists and had many issues - finding anyone qualified to deal with young kids with ODD, availability, those telling me to run to the nearest psychiatrist for medication. NYU was great, and although they didn't really support my instinct that there was SPD at play too (there definitely was), we learned a lot and things are now manageable at home with OT and a new understanding on how to handle the tantrums, appropriate consequences. While medication is effective with some issues, there are no medications that 'cure' ODD (they can lessen symptoms/take the edge off) but I really wanted to try to get to a better place without meds and we were able to.

Feel free to FM me if you want more info.
