Was your child's Kindergarten registration done on two days?

We went in today to register my DD and it took all of 10 minutes, all they did was photocopy the paperwork and then scheduled us to come back end May for the Kindergarten "interview". My husband also took off to be there thinking all would be done today and we were so excited. They really should hav been more specific about it. I'm a teacher myself and they really should do this all on one day, that's a lot to ask working parents to take off two days.

Just a vent I guess-I was expecting a more exciting day.

Yes, that's how my district was also. First day (this time of year) was just bringing in paperwork for them to copy and then I picked a date for taking my daughter in for her "kindergarten screening", which was in early May I believe. My daughter did not come with me to the March visit.

My district did the same - paperwork drop-off one day and the screening another day.

Even the screening wasn't a big deal - I think it was only 30-45 minutes.

Same here. It was just annoying to fill out the same info on 25 sheets of paper.

That's every district. I assume it would be too complicated doing everything in one day, makes sense to me.

Registration was one day for us, then we have K screening another day, then we have parent's orientation another day, and then finally children orientation another day.

My district is the same thing. The screen though is done over the summer, in July usually. It is a also a given date, not one that we pick.

They don't want to screen kids in February and March because the children actually can mature more within the next few months. Since the screenings help inform class placement, they want to do them as close to the end of the year as possible so that they can form heterogeneous classes. Sorry it was a disappointing day! In my district, you can go in to register DC any day you want. The screening is done at a later date, and it is assigned. They do it all in a couple of days for all the children.

In our district it is 3 days, but not all day things. No one I know took a whole day off for it (of the moms that work) only for the orientation day. Our district has a week of registrations 2 times a day, morning and lunch time. It is a 3 min deal. Forms are online you just bring it in, I signed a few things and they gave me a sheet saying screenings would be over this one or two week period, and orientation would be in May. BTW registration is a week in January, but I know people who were away, didn't pay attention etc. They just registered another week. We don't get our screening time or date until April about 1-2 weeks before. The screening was mornings or lunchtime. It took less than 30 mins. Orientation is longer. I think about 2 hours. They break the kids up into about 5 or 6 groups (not their actually placement - I think it was alphabetical). The kids go off and the parents have their own orientation with the principal, nurse, and other teachers.

Re: Was your child's Kindergarten registration done on two days?

I just dropped off the registration packet in the main office on a random day - you could go on the registration day but, you didn't have to. The screening is the interview I think you are referring to - I picked a date when I handed in the registration materials. Then there were a number of open house and orientations for the kids and at night for the parents in the spring after the screening- those were the most worthwhile and the only time I would consider taking off a day or having DH take off (I don't work).

Yes... We had to pick up the packet, drop off all the info, and the screening was done by appt. a few months later.

Ours was 3 days...paperwork day; screening & then Kindergarten tea (in the classroom, they did a craft, met their "teachers") & parents got budget info (from superintendent), info on curriculum from K teacher & welcome from principal.

Ours is over several days. Dropped off paperwork in Feb. Our orientation tea is next Wed. and his DIAL screening is next Fri. Then he has 2 days in May where he goes and sits in on an actual Kindergarten class.

Re: Was your child's Kindergarten registration done on two days?

In my district we register at Central Office in March/April, then we are scheduled to come back in June for DIAL screening...that is done in the building the child will attend with teachers/specialists who will work with your child. And the screening is something that the parents don't come into the room for...the child goes to different stations with different specialists to do different things, so its not much to participate in or watch. My kids actually both have it while they are attending Pre-K, so I won't even be present. I believe if there are concerns, they talk about it with the parents then.

That's GREAT!!! May I ask what district this is? We have to go back Memorial Day week for the screeing but they never mentioned anything about an orientation yet.

Thanks

We had 3 days, registration one day, testing another, parent/student orientation another. They were really spread out though, so it isn't like I had to take off days back to back to back. Plus there was a week where the did half day kindergarten for a week to acclimate them.
