WWYD if your LO got BIT TWO DAYS IN A ROW at daycare by the same child!!
Yes..John got bit yesterday by a child. the director kind of downplayed the incident saying john had his finger near the boys mouth and the child is teething and that's what happened. They told the child's mother and she was mortified of course.
Now I just got a call from his teacher.. she was almost in tears..saying that he was bit again. They can't tell me if it was the same child but obviously it was. this time John reached up onto a shelf and the child bit his forearm
both times no broken skin. They said they were on top of this child and gave him teethers and rings to soothe himself but it was obviously so quick.
WWY say to the director? What would you expect them to do????

I would want the kid moved to another room. I dont tolerate biting. Skin broken is a pretty decent bite. Teething or not. Wrong. And if they know he is teething give him a ring or something to chew on instead ofnyour kid.

This happened to DD..5 times!! I never knew who the biter was an apparently it was different kids. I don't believe they had 5 biters, but whatever! They wound up switching teachers in the room and it never happened again. They also gave me a free week bc they felt so bad.

They gave the baby teethers and rings.....also to add they are all 1 year or younger.
Not sure what's appropriate to expect them to do. KWIM

Awe Linda! I'm sorry. This is still my fear and thank goodness it hasn't happened yet (Knock on wood)
It happens and it stinks. Poor John. Say something to the Director so they keep more of a watch on the biter. Make sure that other kid stays far away from John till he gets over this teething.
Let the Director know you're not happy about it happening twice b/c you really love the school and teachers, blah, blah. Just so they know it bothers you and they're not looking so good right now so John needs some extra attention and love

I would expect they would move the biter to another class and/or get a shadow for the child to see what is causing him/her to bite. I am really sorry that your child was bitten.

I'm so sorry your son was bit, not once but twice. I know thats hard. Personally my issue would be with the teacher/caregiver, not the child. Children DO bite and I hope i'm never the parent of a biter, but the caregivers need to take more procautions to keep him/her from biting other kids. JMO

I totally know what your saying but I can't expect the two teachers to be soely watching this child when there are 7 more kids in the room. KWIM? Meaning.. this happens in a second...a blink of an eye.. that's why I want to suggest they move this kid out of the room. just want to make sure im not over stepping my bounds as a parent. KWIM?

Re: WWYD if your LO got BIT TWO DAYS IN A ROW at daycare by the same child!!
I went through this recently. DS was bit 2x on the arm one day, and again on his forhead a few days later. the biter was doing it to other kids as well and my DS did not provoke her in any way.
DS is in the infant room, so its very hard to discipline for biting at this age. The director and teachers felt terrible. So they made a very good effort to separate this child..keeping her on the playground with a teacher, separated in the room. Its hard, I think, to ask them to remove the biter permanently at this age. When they are old enough to understand, then its different.
We havent had any incidents since. Depending on what the age is, i dont know if they can remove the biter, but they should certainly separate and keep a better eye out.

I hear ya, but the only problem thats going to solve (and its rightfully probably the only one you are concerned with) is him/her biting your son. They should get a floater or the director or assistant director to shadow the child so he/she doesn't have the opportunity to bite. Thats what we always did when I worked in day cares. You are not over stepping your bounds at all. They should be presenting you with a solution....you shouldn't even have to ask.

Re: WWYD if your LO got BIT TWO DAYS IN A ROW at daycare by the same child!!
Can I ask why its "obvious it was the same child?"
At less than 1yrs of age, the children really don't know what they are doing... Therefore I hold the teachers 100% responsible.
What were the children doing when this happened?
How many kids were in the room? How many teachers? What were they doing?
Those are the things I would be concerned with....
Just the other day: 2 babies were playing with the tunnel....baby 1 decided to sit, blocking baby 2 from exiting... Baby 2, doesn't have the words to say "hey move out of my way"- so baby 2; bit baby 1...
Absolutely not ok.. but that baby didn't know what they were doing...
The teachers should have been there...should have seen it coming... when baby 1, blocked baby 2- they should have been there to pull baby 1 out of the way...
Are there enough toys in this classroom? Are they age appropriate? Is the biter really "too old" for the classroom"... there is a long list of way to prevent this from reoccurring, but it all boils down to the teachers managing their classroom and their supervision!

Wait, what's the teacher/child ratio?
I guess you can ask them to move the kid since the classroom is small. Doesn't hurt to ask. Like I said, keep reiterating how much you love the school and how happy you are, but that you're dissapointed it happened twice! Once is fine. Not a good thing, but to happen twice when they know this child is teething is unacceptable. Did you call them today to see how John is doing? Make sure the biter is preoccupied so he keeps his teeth to himself

the teacher illuded to it b/c she is tech not supposed to tell me but off the record she told me.
8 kids 2 teachers. my son had his arm up reaching for a shelf when the child bit him.
Im not suggesting they discipline this chiild but they need to do something!!! two days in a row..not good.
It's also a "new addition" to the room.

Re: WWYD if your LO got BIT TWO DAYS IN A ROW at daycare by the same child!!
My DS has been bitten by the same child 3x. The last 2 times, the bite has been significant and left a bruise for over week. The last one actually broke the first few layers of skin and he was wearing a shirt.
Honestly, it stinks but it's the age group. Like pp said, they don't have words yet and biting is how they communicate and get frustration out. I would definitely ask that your DC be watched and separated from this child for a little while to avoid the situation from arising.

Nope not supposed to tell, and shouldn't of alluded to anything, because IMO it only makes her look worse..
Let me understand this: "my child got bit YESTERDAY by baby X and yet today, you kept yourself far enough away, and your supervision down- that baby X was able to bite my baby again?"
Again- this boils down to the teachers...
Children under 18 months of age can not combine with children 18 months and older...so depending on this childs age, and your centers break down of age groups- he may not be able to move up.
The child is new, and its likely the school is not going to "kick this child out" (out of the class or school) based on 2 bites during his 1st week... He's a baby...a baby in an unfamiliar environment, and a teething baby at that...that doesn't make it ok... but my concern would not be that child but the supervision in the classroom....

Point def. taken. I guess I just have such a great relationship wtih the teachers that i hate to "blame" them. I know who much the love my son. The teach was in tears while talking to me. But I get what your saying.
ETA: they are the same age.. and the child has been there for maybe 3 weeks.

Re: WWYD if your LO got BIT TWO DAYS IN A ROW at daycare by the same child!!
I don't think the teachers loves your son any less; I just think they may need some more training...
When my staff brings me a child who has been bitten my 1st response to them is "Where were you"- stuff happens, and I understand that but children who are engaged and properly supervised don't get bitten...
New toys should constantly be rotated through the room, the babies shouldn't be roaming freely on the floor without a teacher sitting right there with them... ...And a child who bit yesterday, should have been hugging the teachers hip today!
There are great biting classes offered to teachers, the director may need to send these teacher for some specific training in this area...
They may need some toys...
But they def. just need to be on top of those kids...
Someone needs to be there to say to baby 2- tell baby 1 "please move out of the way" and show baby 1 the right way to use the tunnel... they are babies, but they still need to be taught the right way to use the toys, or taught the words to say- know what I mean?
I can't imagine how I would feel, but def talk to the teachers and director about heightening the supervision level in that room...
If I can help you with anything, please let me know!

Re: WWYD if your LO got BIT TWO DAYS IN A ROW at daycare by the same child!!
I'm sorry this happened to you.
It's a very difficult situation because you're dealing with very young toddlers and discipline sometimes isn't going to resolve the issue. Nor is moving the child to another room. Why? so the child can bite other kids?
I think the issue more is that if a child is a "biter" than the center need to ensure that the teacher, or even a shadow, is placed in the room to watch that child like a hawk and redirect the child each and every time they attempt to bite. I think that is the more effective way of handing it.
I really hope that your son doesn't get any more bites

Poor John . . .but honestly there isn't much you can do. Biting happens in a split second, and he/she is baby and doesn't know any better, kwim? One day John could turn around and be a biter. . .Joey bites me all the time, he also got bit at daycare twice.
I'm surprised many are saying have the child remove suppose it was your child.

Re: WWYD if your LO got BIT TWO DAYS IN A ROW at daycare by the same child!!
I would tell them that while you understood the first time that said child might be teething, they were put on notice of this and are thus now fully liable for any other biting incidents and you feel that they owe your son the duty to make sure the biter is supervised around him. If all else fails, you can let them know that John has an Aunt who is an attorney But seriously, I would demand that this known biter be supervised around John.

I agree with Dev that removing the child isn't the issue Lin. It is the teachers who need to focus more on the children who are a risk to the other children. Obviously no one is perfect, but if you know someone is a biter, you keep a closer eye on him than the rest of the children.
