Age 9 and up Internet use

What do you parents let your 9+ kids do on the net? My DD discovered google plus. My sisters are telling me not to let her use it even if I monitor it closely. I don't want to be overly controlling and restrictive but obviously want her to be safe. My parenting style is more along the lines of following rules and guidelines with open communication. DD should be able to come to me with any questions or problems and not hide things from me. I think I am naive with the net though.

My son is 9 and we pretty much follow the same philosophy as you. He googles things and uses YouTube and I check his history often to make sure he's staying away from anything inappropriate. He also uses FaceTime, iMessage and email, which I also monitor on my iPad since our accounts are linked.

My 8 year old uses google and YouTube and has access to FaceTime, which he never uses.

So far so good with Internet use in our house!

DS will be 10 next week. Is is on the Internet a lot, but mostly read-only. He is on a couple of Minecraft servers, and I built him his own server, but for his server, he has to know the players personally (schoolmates, and not 45 yos from Sweden or anything.... ),and add them to a access control list.

He's more conservative about the web now than I am, so I'm keeping an eye on what he's doing, but letting him govern himself (for now...)

Age 9 and up Internet use

When my 11 yr old son uses my laptop I'm near him ..I can see hear what he does on...Im cooking dinner or other household stuff. He does NOT have facebook, email, skype. I sometimes will go on with him if he wants to see a video or look up something for school.
My sister let her then 12 & 14 yr old create a FB acct and its been nothing but trouble since..the stuff these girls chat about and pictures they post of themselves is disgusting. you have to monitor your children!! HAVE TOO!!!
