If your DC "graduated" out of services

Did you find they needed them again as they got older?

DS is getting OT and SEIT right now through CPSE. We think he is doing excellent and I was speaking with the SEIT yesterday and she said there is really no more justification for the services. Don't blast me but it can also be a PITA having people coming in and out all the time for this stuff, so we were planning to discontinue next year anyway, even w/o the SEIT opinion, and just see how he does.

His current teacher told us at his conference several months ago that out of all the kids in her class, he really is one of her best and is shocked that we made a referral. ETA: He always has done really well in school---it's been outside of school where we first got concerned, and even now he really has no more major issues, unless of course he is super tired.

His meeting is on Thursday. Anything you recommend I say/don't say?

If your DC

I would be more concerned about the OT, to be honest than the SEIT, because while I am not a special ed teacher, I feel like we can do activities with DS that a special ed teacher could suggest. OT skills are things I am not as familiar with and knowing what kind of skill level he would need to have. I would ask the OT what she thinks before giving that up, but if the SEIT feels like he doesn't need it anymore and you agree, I would probably let it go.

If the teacher and the SEIT don't see the need for the services, the district will probably want to drop it anyway.

Thanks for your feedback. The OT actually called me yesterday and felt that there are still "things" he needs to work on that could justify the need for services, however, she can't steer the committee.

From being in the field I have seen that once services get taken away, it is difficult, if not impossible to get them back.

Re: If your DC "graduated" out of services

I was conferenced in for his CPSE meeting yesterday and they decided to let SEIT finish out the year, along with the OT.

While SEIT is done, they also are recommending OT in the beginning of the school year for 10 weeks to see how things are going after the summer and if he doesn't need it, they will D/C it then.

The OT wasn't present but the SEIT said she still has concerns about his fine motor.

He will go to write, get frustrated and give up. He needs to be redirected constantly.

She also said (and I noticed this the other day at an event at his school), that he won't stay in his seat unless he is constantly prompted to do so.

It's interesting because his teacher said there are no issues, however, his SEIT is with him for the first half of his sessions at school when they are working on tasks in their seats. I believe the second half, they are involved in physical activities, playground, etc.

He will only be going into Pre-K next year (12/30 birthday so he missed the K cut off), so I am hoping he will be on regular track by K.

If your DC

I would keep an eye on the getting redirected. The preschool teachers may not notice this as much, because at that age, most kids have trouble sitting still. I never heard from my DS's preschool teacher that he couldn't stay in his seat, but maybe he was no worse than anyone else. Now that he is in K, we do hear that he has trouble staying focused and staying in his seat. If that remains a problem or gets worse, I might look for the district toi re-instate the SEIT for him.

My DS is in Kindergarten now. He graduated PT when he finished school in August (he did the pre k 6 week program).

Now he gets OT 1x and speech 3.

I had his CSE meeting this week and we are keeping it just like that.
OT works on so much!
DS HATED writing and it's amazing how far he's come.

Whatever they offer, I'd keep! I was a nervous wreck when he graduated PT. He's doing well though.
