Can we discuss the pet thread on FHF?
Not looking to start drama again but I figured this was a safe space to vent about it. We're all pet lovers here and some of us still may have different responses, I just don't get why people seem so upset that some of us said we would risk our lives for our pets??? If you wouldn't that's fine - why can't it be fine that I think I would?

Because they have nothing to do except sit behind a computer.
People make YOUR choices THEIR business.
"I CANT believe you would..."
"How could you EVER decide..."
I think I responded well. When brought my dog home, it was a responsability I did not take lightly. This includes keeping him safe at almost any cost. He cant speak for himself, so I MUST be his voice in the world.
And the fact is, people see our pets as "JUST" a dog. Its JUST a dog, so why would risk your life to save it? They are narrow and closed minded and cant possable grasp what we are TRYING to say. They just see what they THINK we are saying.
All of us would risk harm to save our animals. Most of us would risk our lives.
I do think that in almost CERTAIN death I dont know if I could try to save him ie: burning building where there is no hope.
But I would damn well do my best to do SOMETHING.

Re: Can we discuss the pet thread on FHF?
This is the theme on LIF. No one seems to understand the different between understanding and agreeing/disagreeing.
Do I understand people who wouldn't risk their life? Yes. 100% I understand. I just don't agree and would chose to behave different obviously.
I feel that most of the time, these "what if" scenarios presented by someone other then the OP are only meant to either 1. Add more fuel (in their mind) to their argument, or 2. To find some fault in the defending persons argument. Very rarely do I think they are used to truly understand another POV.
Whatever. I love my Bailey dog and no one can make me feel any differently.

It's just bizarre.... why are they so upset? It makes no sense- it's a matter of opinion and personal preference and no matter what they say, does NOT affect them in any way, shape, or form. LIF never ceases to astound me with it's ability to make drama out of nothing. Maybe my dog is a diabetic and needed a drink of water and fell in, would it then be okay to save him?

Re: Can we discuss the pet thread on FHF?
I really just think it depends on the person. Some people react differently than others but I know for ME, my gut instinct would be to do everything in my power to try and save my animals. I don't fault anyone for their decision not to save an animal over their own safety, everyone is entitled to react how they see fit. However, I will not justify how or why I would react, nor will I justify why I think of my animals as children. I have a very special bond with Toby and Lenny, and they have always been there for me, so I would without hesitation do everying in my power to save them as I know they would do for me. I feel it's my responsibility as their caregiver and its not for anyone else to have to understand.

I think a lot of people also aren't thinking what would you do in a split second. Most people are under the impression that the would stop and think oh that's not a good idea but its honestly just a reaction. As I said in the original post my dog was attacked by a pit bull. I didn't think I just ripped the dog off of mine even though he had blood literally dripping from its mouth. Was it the smartest decision nope would I do it again yes. It's instinct to protect or at least it is to me. Could I have gotten hurt of course but did I think about any of that nope.
But also to many people a pet is just an object mine are family. I love them just as much as I love my dh and my unborn child and would do anything to protect them.

It was terrifying. We were just walking my dog. He was in the middle of dh and I and the pit broke through a fence. Don't know if he was going after me or my dog but my dog threw himself in front me and the pit latched onto his leg. The owner actually tried to blame us saying we shouldn't have walked our leashed dog on his block needless to say almost $1k later my dog healed but it was my job to protect him like he felt it was his job to protect me.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to own dogs lol.
About 9 years ago I was driving home from somewhere and all of a sudden, 2 blocks from my house, I heard someone scream "noo" and then something hit my car. Turns out it was a puppy lab . He was off his leash, hit by my car, got up and then was hit by another car. The other asshole driver sped off. . W/o thinking I grabbed the dog, threw him in the back of my little 2 door saturn along with the person walking the dog (not the owner) and sped off to the nearest vet. The person walking the dog was very nice and knew it was his fault b/c the dog wasn't on a leash and didn't even have collar on. He told me to go home but did call me later to say they had to put the puppy to sleep and thanked me for trying to help. Not once did I realize that I'd be responsible for the vet bills since I technically brought the dog in. I didn't care. I wanted to help save the dog.
Well, 4 days later I get a letter in my mailbox saying she (the owner) was going to sue me for killing her dog and doing nothing about it. She also said she knew I had a dog and would take him away so I could feel the same pain she did. I understand being in pain due to the loss but really? Lady I tried to save your dog due to your brothers negligence.
Some people are stupid. Some should be more like dogs lol. (I know that's bad to say but for some people it's true lol)
HA... I totally went off on a tangent lol. Sorry lol

Re: Can we discuss the pet thread on FHF?
Our pets are our children. No doubt about it. I believe that they understand us, and we understand them.
Prime example: I was pretty sure what DH would say, but I wanted to ask anyway. I just asked DH if he would jump into a river after one of our cats. He immediately said, "Yes. I would run into a burning house for them." I said that I would too.
As soon as we said this, one of our cats, Puddin', who was sitting on a chair right next to him, jumped up, grabbed his arm, and started purring like crazy. I then picked Puddin' up, and he held onto my shoulders so tightly like he never has before.

Can we discuss the pet thread on FHF?
I love my Maggie. Before I had my son, maybe I would agree with everyone. but now that I have a child I have to say if I knew severe injury or death would be my fate, I'd think twice. I couldn't do that to my child, parents (who will most likely need my care in the future), or my family....

Just because someone wouldn't do something dangerous to save their pets doesn't mean they have the right to judge those of us that would.

Re: Can we discuss the pet thread on FHF?
I would do anything to save the lives of my dogs and cats. Yes, I would risk my life for them...and DH would do the same. I honestly believe it would be a simple reaction vs. stopping to think about it...but on my part, no thought necessary. My belief...My choice.
I respect there are people who are parents and have to think of their children first. That is their choice and decision...and so long as they respect mine, we're all good.
Some one who thinks of their pets as JUST pets...disposable... well... unfortunately having people like that in my life - I've been practically brow-beaten to see their point of view...(and NEVER will )... but understand that there are differences in opinions and I will respectfully agree to disagree with them.
