She doesn't come to our house, but Donna Lederman has been a miracle worker for us. She is a PROMPT speech therapist.

Re: Private Speech Therapist?

I have heard great things about Donna too. We almost went, but she doesn't take insurance and we just couldn't afford it (evaluation is $400).

So the search for us continues.

Donna is wonderful but she doesn't come to your home. She can diagnose Apraxia and give private speech in one of her locations. ow old is she? Has the diagnosis of Apraxia been given or did the evaluator discuss oral motor as the main issue?

DD will be 3 in June.
I had her privately evaluated and it was stated she had oral motor weakness and scored in the 10th percentile for articulation and pronunciation.
However, insurance denied us for services.

Have you gotten her evaluated through your school district? If not it is something you should look into.

no, we have not gone through the school system yet because I was told that it is very difficult to get services for her since it is just an articulation difficulty and not an true expressive/receptive deficit.

The District is more apt the give services for articulation and oral motor skills at the preschool level. However its usually at 3 years of age only because articulation is still considered developmental below 3. So if you cant find a private try the district in September. Did the report say what sounds she was misarticulating?

We go to island therapies for speech and they take insurance. We also go to Donna Lederman 1 time a week. I submit the claims to our insurance and they take a portion of it.

Not all kids need prompt therapy so I would start with a regular therapist first to save you money. I think they only approve services for articulation issues at the preschool level.

I was told that the district is less likely to give services only for articulation at this age because it is not seen as a developmental delay. What district were you told differently if you dont mind me asking?
The report was extremely general - it was done as a favor - more like a quick screening written up as an evaluation so it did not say specifics.
It more so said weakness with oral motor muscles, 10th % for articulation and that the instructor understood little to nothing of what the child said.

I'm sorry I forgot to come back and check on your post. I would 100% have her evaluated through CPSE without a DOUBT. Even if she isn't eligible she will be in the system and followed. If her articulation continues to show delays she may receive district services. The evaluation is free and the SP Therapist will also give you advice and pointers going forward. I work for an EI Agency that has a great SLP evaluator. I have a list of all CPSE Chair's so please let me know if you would like that info. Good Luck!

Re: Private Speech Therapist?

I don't know about li but for NYC it is VERY hard to get services for an artic delay alone. The city only pays if it causes academic delays (ie receptive and expressive delays). That being said I have in the past reccomended services based on the fact that the child is falling behind because their artic delays are causing social anxiety in the classroom. At such a young age you can push that they won't succeed without communicating their basic needs and wants. Fm me is you want more info
