when you call out sick, are you specific about your illness?

When you call your supervisor to call out sick, what do you tell them?
how specific do you get?

if you leave it vague, for example, " hi so and so, i am afraid i can not come in today. i am not feeling well" do you think they want a further elaboration?

Re: when you call out sick, are you specific about your illness?

I just leave a voicemail saying that it's me and that I don't feel well. No details - that's how my boss prefers it.

Re: when you call out sick, are you specific about your illness?

It really depends..
I'll say I'm sick..
If they say ok, feel better, I leave it at that.
If they say aww are you ok?, I give some details.
If I leave a voicemail, I just leave it at "I'm not feeling well". The end.

I do not give details--its none of their business.

The only time I did say anything was when I had pinkeye, and instructed them not to touch anything on my desk!

I generally just say "I need to use PTO today." and leave it at that.

If they asked I would just say I wasn't feeling well.

Re: when you call out sick, are you specific about your illness?

It's a bit different for me because my boss is kind of like my friend.
So I will text him in the morning saying- "Hey, I was up with a stomach virus all night and it's NOT pretty!"
He will then text back- "yikes! Stay home!"

But in other circumstance I don't think I'd get that deep into it.
More like- hey I feel pretty awful today and need to take a sick day.

Re: when you call out sick, are you specific about your illness?

I just text my boss, "Hey. I'm not feeling too good today so I won't be in. I'll use sick/comp time". That's it. His response is normally just an ok feel better.

I usually just say I'm not feeling well and will be out. When I come back, especially if I've been out for a few days, my boss will ask if I'm feeling better and what was wrong and then I'll usually tell her.

Same here.. my boss is very easy going...

plus, she knows if I'm texting her that I'm sick.. then I really am - as I tell her straight out if I'm taking off cause I just want to.. Chat Icon

Re: when you call out sick, are you specific about your illness?

Ive called in sick once in over 4 years. I just sent her a text saying I had a bug and was not going to be able to make it. No questions asked.

I call my boss and say not feeling well.
I don't elaborate, it is none of their business.
Our PTO is called "occasional days" instead of sick days.

I rarely call in sick, usually plan my days off ahead of time.

Re: when you call out sick, are you specific about your illness?

i rarely call in sick, but if I do and it's something obvious like a cold I'll say but otherwise no.

I don't think they are legally allowed to ask . . .

By law (HIPPA) they are not allowed to probe your illness. A simple I am sick or not feeling well will suffice.

Despite working in the health care industry, there was one woman working at my former employer that would always ask what's wrong, one of my nuttier coworkers once told her she had explosive diarrhea. I swear after that she stopped asking, Chat Icon

It always irks me when people call out and someone says "ugh. but they were fine yesterday!"

Dude.. Things can happen overnight.

Diarrhea is one of them.

I don't usually give specifics unless it is something that might be more than a day or 2 and I HATE when people call in to me and relay their symptoms. You have sick time to use, be my guest! Chat Icon

I am always in the habit of giving the info, only bc if i dont i know:
a) everyone around office will be talking loudly about "why isnt xyz here today"
b) they will ask me "what was wrong" or "is everything OK?" when i get back
So annoying

pretty much the same *IF* I call in at all.

Generally I just email my boss, the receptionist and one of my coworkers with an email

From: Me
To: Them
Date: today
RE: out sick

Message:
(one of these two options)
A - Still checking emails.
B - Won't be online at all.

Thanks

hahaha. No one needs a play by play. I'm vomitting last night's dinner from one side and pushing it out the other? No I dont think so (no this has never happened to me but one lady actually let us know this) Or my vertigo bouts: I can't sit up straight much less walk or drive.

if im sick im sick leave it at that. Now day two, I may add something like "My head is still not clear" or "I'm nearly there" but I am actually NOT sick very often so I figure I owe them no explanation. Given one coworker calls in for cramps, the other for a tooth ache, one for allergies and the other for sore throat, I think im allowed. LOL

ETA: My office email NEVER has an out of office message, unless I'm REALLY out on vacation (like Disney). Even then I check. I'm farily connected to my clients. They all know and trust they can always get something from me if its urgent. I check emails when sick, out with AJ, home with AJ, at CE classes, to and from client meetings, on holidays.

I'm just your friendly hard working insurance broker.. LOL you need it, I got it for ya! 8am to usually about 8pm then I shut it down.

NYC office rules were to NEVER use an out of office. Here they use it all the time when they aren't at their desk, I still don't.

Re: when you call out sick, are you specific about your illness?

I am up front and honest with my boss. She thinks it is ridiculous when someone calls in and acts sick when they are not so if I just want to take the day off and use it as sick, I do.

I send my manager and email stating I'm not feeling well and will be out for the day.

If m really sick and need another day, ill usually call later on that day and let him know I won't be in again tomorrow. That happened once, and he didn't even question it.

I usually do because it's usually for a stomach bug and I like to give people the heads up.

I don't work anymore, but when I did, I would give specifics. I worked for a nursing home, so it was helpful for them to know if there was something going around, especially when dealing with flu or stomach virus.

Usually not. It's not a good habit to get into. Mainly because you never know when that will bite you later on.
