You know, I always say that there are multiple sides to every story: the sides of those involved, the witnesses, and the truth.
We will likely never know with 100% certainty what happened in the park, but there are things we can learn from it and use to prevent another tragedy like this from occurring.
Cops need training to deal with dogs. UPS, FedEx, meter readers, USPS all receive comprehensive training on dealing with dogs and aggression etc but based on the increasing reports of cops shooting dogs, it doesn't seem like cops get much training (except shoot first, ask questions later).
Owners of dogs, especially bully breeds, need to make sure they are being responsible owners and leashing their dogs. Owners of bully breeds, rotties, dobies, GSD's and other dogs commonly referred to as vicious should be taking those extra precautions because of the stigmas attached to them. I am well aware that if something were to ever happen, my dog is going to be the one blamed simply based on her appearance. Shelters and rescue groups would benefit these dogs more by explaining to prospective adopters that they should never allow their dogs off leash and should refer to instances like this.
That's not to say that if Baby Girl was leashed or if the cop was trained better in dog behavior that this incident still may not have occurred (like Traysee noted, sometimes a dog can slip away from it's handler) but it may have had a different outcome. But, there are a lot of questions that need to be answered, such as why the cop didn't try macing the dog if she felt it was a threat or why the cops opted to hide Baby Girl preventing her from getting treatment. It also needs to be addressed if this officer actually did open fire towards the dogs with the two handlers present. THAT is another piece of information that I find especially troublesome. If you're protecting a person who is supposedly being attacked do you fire your weapon blindly towards them from a distance or approach closer first?
And, Guyinblue, I am not a cop basher at all, but the story from the police doesn't add up IMHO. Maybe if this cop hadn't had a prior incident involving irresponsibility with her service weapon or maybe if one of the dog's handlers wasn't also a cop, I would be more inclined to believe the "official" story. But, something is most definitely off with the conflicting stories from the handlers, the NYPD, and witness reports.

Despite what you might write in reply, this will be my last post on this topic. I am an animal lover and will be the FIRST one to speak out when a cop does something wrong or is outside guidelines of training. As I have stated, IN THIS CASE (READ: this particular one), you do NOT have the accurate facts and your assumptions are incorrect....so much so, that while you call me "nasty", you are completely naive (that's right, I said it, lol).
That being said, I totally applaud your animal rights advocacy efforts. It would be nice however, if you chose the appropriate situations with which to exercise them - this is NOT one of them, plain and simple, end of story, I'm done. Thanks.
P.S. if you really need to reply, send me FM because I will not be reading this post anymore. Maybe if we argue the points in private we'll come to an agreement...... Ciao! Ciao!

Exactly.
I can't for the life of me understand why anyone is opposed to better/more training for police officers and dealing with dogs. It's beneficial for the community AND the officers.
Absolutely baffling.

the funny thing is I know you will be back to read my (our) responses!
Another funny thing is-you never seem to comment on three important things:
1-the entry and exit of the bullet
2-that the officer had her gun already taken away
3-she opened fire in a public park potentially causing harm to innocent people-are you trained to do this?

Naive is you! I'm not quite sure how a cop can be so naive to believe that cover ups don't happen! there, I said it too! :)~
I would be naive if I believed cops are not trigger happy in certain situation or that cover ups and lies don't exist.
You are calling the wrong one naive--but I get it--every post you write shows your character or lack there of.
Again, if I am wrong to believe the dog owners then-I'm wrong-- I can handle being wrong but until proven otherwise-I believe their story! Why are you so mad about that? You are acting like this is the first place that this story has been published! That I am the one who is spreading "false" info (which this has yet to be proven)--when the story is all over the news and internet already! Even IF the dog was lunging as you say--The COP still opened fire in a public park where innocent people could have been injured!! There is simply no excuse for that! Better training is needed terribly--no question about it!

It's just really hard to believe that a cop who already had her gun taken away wouldn't make another bad decision--I am really having a hard time with that---oh wait, she did make another bad decision opening fire in a public park! How could you stick up for someone like this? Really. I am so thankful that she is one of NY's finest--makes me feel so safe

Her lawyer will be holding a press conference at 2pm on Monday at her memorial in Schmul Park, Staten Island NY. If anyone would like to show their support and attend, it would be greatly appreciated. But we do ask that everyone be respectful and peaceful :)

Sorry, but I am highly irritated by your post. Your "facts" are completely wrong. The story posted is NOT what actually happened. More importantly, it is disturbing that you assumed them to be factual and accurate simply because you read it somewhere. What's worse is that you then jump to the conclusion from that false assumption that some cops are trigger happy and kill dogs with no just cause. Do you know the training that we go through? Do you know what "just cause" is in that particular situation? Were you there at the scene or get the story firsthand from someone that was? If you answered no to any of those questions, you definitely should not presume to know what's right or wrong in a situation like that when you don't even have a factually accurate story. Instead, you publish a petition that makes false accusations about a story that you just "read".
As an emphatic animal lover, and cop, I believe your post is totally unwarranted as written..... "just trying to spread some awareness...."
So people can't discuss and have opinions on published news because they weren't a personal witness?

I don't think he is reading/replying to this thread anymore.
But he is also not understanding that I am not getting my information from some place I "just read". I got my information from Courtney (SNARR rescue group) Courtney is who was interviewed on NBC about this case and has direct contact with the owner). She is the person who placed the Baby Girl, the dog who was shot, with the owner. She got their account of the story directly from the owner and her cop friend who was there. SNARR is also helping to fund the lawsuit.
I believe strong island is also getting her information either directly from the same source or from one of the other rescue groups affiliated with the urgent death row dogs list. They all network together.

Yes, same place traysee! :) and of course, it is around everywhere with rescue groups, etc. too!
That's why I believe the story of the dog owner's bc it is coming directly from them---why would they go to such lengths with a lawyer and such if their side wasn't true, kwim? And that it is 'under investigation' seems real fishy to me too.
Can't wait to hear what happens tomorrow.

Im sure in her mind she was protecting the public from an out of control dog that just bit someone. If she had listened to the owner and the owners cop friend who was there she would have known that Baby Girl didn't bit anyone and the dogs who were in the fight to being with were already back under the owners control.

Wow I didn't know she shot at her from 150 feet away. That is pretty far away especially when the dog was running AWAY. So if she shot her gun SEVEN times and hit the dog twice, then the other 5 bullets didn't hit the dog. So where did those bullets go? Now if this is a public park and she was trying to protect people from the imminent danger of a "charging" dog why didn't those people get shot? In my mind they didn't get shot because they weren't near the dog. Thus the dog was not charging at anyone or else she would have been open firing on both the dog and the people the dog was supposedly charging after.

Yeah, there was another shooting I read maybe 3-4 weeks ago about cops shooting and killing a four month old puppy. Bottom line is, if you own a bully breed you can't let them out of your sight, you can't leave them alone in the yard, you can't let them off leash. It's a death sentence. And honestly, if strangers were scaring me with a catch pole and a uniformed officer was "pushing" me with a batton (yeah right) I would probably get defensive.
All they needed to do was offer the dog some hot dog and the dog would have probably followed them anywhere. Sad. City employees need to learn how to use an indirect approach instead of escalating every situation and creating fear. And why didn't the neighbor walk over and just grab the dog? She knew him. She should have just grabbed the dog before the cops showed up.
