Admissions Counselor
Does anyone have any experience being an admissions counselor? I'm curious about it being a position I could balance with being the mom of a young child. Any info would be appreciated!

It depends on the position. You might have to attend social events, high school and college open houses. You might also have to stay late, and attend weekend open houses for the school. I think its a good starting point if you want to stay in academics. But, your schedule will have to be flexible.

Childcare arrangements definitely are key in ANY kind of position, if you want my honest opinion.
Even when I worked F/T at my last job, which allowed me to work from home, I could have never done that realistically each day and gotten any kind of serious work done. This is actually the reason I went into the office most days.
But it does sound like it is the type of role which will require a commitment after traditional business hours (even if they let you adjust your schedule on those days).

When I wanted to leave my law firm practice (before I transitioned to real estate), I looked into a lot of academic positions at law schools.
It seemed that any position working in admissions involved some weekend hours and some travel, for the reasons previous posters stated (attendance at college fairs and those types of activities). I looked into career services/counseling positions at law schools and other institutes of higher education, and it seemed to require similar flexibility. You can't assume you will be off summers, holiday breaks, etc.
It's probably worth looking into - I think those are great jobs -- they don't necessarily pay great, but I would love to do that for a career. But I decided with a young child at home, it wouldn't be the flexibility I wanted to trade off for my high paying law job. I might re-visit it when my DS is much older.

Thanks for your input ladies. Luckily I have an amazing routine for child care and a lot of help from my mom and MIL but was curious if with traveling and the hours if it would be doable with a little one. Thanks!

I work at a college, based on what I see here, there is a lot of turnover in that position. So i'm not sure what that exactly means. Good luck!

I worked in admissions right out of college. Some have in house staff, which means you don't have to travel but at most colleges working in admissions means you will be doing recruitment in your target territory. You usually give lots of presentations and attend lots of college fairs, open houses, etc. I found admissions to be the type of position where you always had to be "on" and I did not enjoy the travel.

Probably not true for all of them, but lots of guidance counselors start out there and try to transition into public schools. Pay can be low, but that depends on the college. (I've seen schools offer 38k and others offer in the 50's).
It's doable with a young child. Lots of colleges have daycare on-site for their employees, so that might be an option for you. But... keep in mind that college fairs can be at night or on weekends. Sometimes admissions recruiters do a lot of traveling and/or are sent on overnights.
