Volunteer firehouse
DH and I have two kids age 1 year and 3 years. I am fortunate enough to be home. Being home outweighed some sacrifices but economically daycare cost too much. Anyway, he is a volunteer fireman and not for community reasons but the supposedly tax break and $700.00 a year towards a pension. Tax break ... how much ...he still is not sure because no one knows for certain ... we are guessing $900.0 00 a year ... so we get $1600.00. He has to attend weekly meeting, be on call march in parades. I am frustrated because he is investing a lot of time with little or no reward. Can anyone relate? Come the fall he will be working his second job again which means he will not be home until 10:30 PM three nights a week and still meet firehouse obligations. Everything seems to be on top of me.

Re: Volunteer firehouse
If he's doing it for the savings/pension and that's the only time he has to put in, I wouldn't worry too much. One of us were going to join our FD but we had to respond to a certain number of fires per year which is a problem at this point. I work FT on a rotating schedule and DH works 3 different jobs (1 f/t and 2 p/t). It's only one of us with DS most of the time so we couldn't invest the time. Unfortunately, if you are a SAHM the sacrifice is that you have to handle EVERYTHING at home. I have the same issue and I work, but he's working so much more than me that I have to handle all the day to day stuff.

Yes, he also has to respond to a certain number of calls per year ... it is percentage based on the number of calls which you truly never know until the end of the year. He gets a point for each call he responds to and a point for each meeting and such. I know that every little counts it is just so frustrating.

Re: Volunteer firehouse
The hours you need to put in are sooooo not worth any breaks or compensation you receive . You have to really want to be there.
