If you did a bunch of renovations at once....

Some yourselves to save money, how long of a time frame did it generally take to start and complete.

DH is a licensed contractor so he is going to oversee/complete many to save costs, so I anticipate this adding to the time frame since he also works F/T.

At this point we just had the architect apply for the permit. ETA: We are Town of Babylon.

We are planning:

New windows/siding.
Moving our front door.
Adding on a front covered porch.
Knocking out our living room wall to make an open floor plan.
Gutting/adding brand new kitchen.
New flooring/paint throughout.

The outside stuff is started first.

TIA!!!

We are doing the kitchen, basement and fence. DH is taking care of the first two. He started about 6 months ago... It's slow going, but it's saving a lot. We also had a baby 5 months ago and DH is home with him all day, so he hasn't had much time.

Out of curiosity -- what did you have to apply for permits for? I'm also Town of Babylon and we haven't applied for any permits for any of the work we're doing and I'm wondering if we have to.

From what I understand, since we are doing a structural change (front porch) we need a permit.

I don't think it matters what you do inside your house.

We demoed our entire 1st floor and we had no kitchen for about 6 weeks. It wasn't too bad but frustrating at times..

Thanks for responding. This is basically going to be our situation.

We have our bedrooms/bathroom so I am hoping it won't be too horrible during the other stuff.

We basically BBQ'ed all the time and ate sandwiches.

Make sure you have plenty of paper plates, plastic utensils and cups.

Good Luck!

We are in the process of redoing the entire upstairs at once before moving in to our new home. We knocked down walls, redid our kitchen, new molding, new doors, new electrical, new lighting (hi hats, etc), took down wood paneling and replaced with sheet rock, repaired, sanded, and finished wood floors, replaced staircase and railing, added a vent to the bathroom, and updated our central air, painted the entire house.

We are using family who only worked on weekends when they were not at their full-time jobs. We closed on our house in January. We are still not living there 6 months later. Needless to say, WE WILL NEVER DO THIS AGAIN! When we are ready to redo the downstairs. We will pay the extra money to hire people who can do the work full-time.
