Jobs NYC entertainment, sales, etc

I am looking to work in manhattan a few days a week preferably a Tuesday and Saturday. I need to make good money since I will be traveling from way out east. I love to write and have been blogging over two years.

I have sales experience, with Avon for four years, reservationist experience for two years, and am a certified home health aide. I am looking to get into the entertainment field as well, but am open to other suggestions.

Just from the brief snippet you wrote, you kind of sound all over the place.

I'd also be curious to what your definition is of "good money", especially because from the way this reads you have limited availability.

Are you looking for help with career suggestions or for people to share potential openings?

Can I ask why you are looking to work in Manhattan if you live way out east? Is it because you think the money will be better? I think given the time and money you will spend (whether on gas/tolls, or train) going into the city for what is a very part-time job, you might be better off staying closer to home.

As far as writing -- I feel like a lot of part-time work that is flexible would be something you could do from home on a freelance basis (whether it's writing, copyediting, etc.).

When I worked at my old law firm, which was a big law firm in Manhattan, we had a "document services" department that would assist with things like proofreading and formatting major documents (briefs to be filed with a court, major client presentations). A lot of the people who staffed that department were actors, singers, etc. who were trying to work in Manhattan theater, but did this to pay the bills. It was a 24/7 operation, so they looked for people to work overnight (and left daytime free for auditions). So I know it was a flexible part-time thing for a lot of people.

Not sure what you mean by getting into "entertainment." What aspect of it? Maybe if you are more specific, people can give more helpful suggestions or let you know of some leads or openings that may work for you.

I can think of a few "entertainment" jobs that you would make "good money" in manhattan working a few random days a week but I'm not sure they are the type of jobs you are looking for.Chat Icon

I am looking to just get away from the country for a few days a week and get into the city to work and aim towards a career. I have looked at paralegal work, I was explaining my work experience in the earlier post. I really want to work in the Entertainment field and need entry level, most entertainment jobs require degrees, which I don't have.

Production Assistant, assistant director, those two jobs are entry level but I only know of one program which I wouldn't get into. Olive98 what type of jobs are there I am very flexible with what I work? As far as Pay I'm not quiet sure again its really not about the money to start, I just need something to show some money.

Production assistants work insane hours generally and not just long hours, but overnight hours. You also are on call a lot. The pay is ridiculous small and won't be worth it.

Assistant directors - you need to have experience & have budgeting experience & know of healthy and safety requirements. It's a very high-pressured job.

If you blog and write well, you can freelance.

One option for quick money that involves ghost writing is signing uo for textbroker.com. You sign up and take a writing test. It's just a small writing sample - they give you a topic. It's graded. If you get a good score, you can then go ahead and write and be paid for whatever you do. I have been paid writing things about cake pops. My name isn't on it, it's used for a bakery's website in Arizona or wherever. But it's still some extra money and you can do it at home and if you like to write and can bang out things quickly, it's easy. I do it because I like writing and it keeps my skills sharp and it's quick $. You just need to adhere to SEO based writing, which anyone can do. They will tell you exactly how to do it.

You may be able to work part time as a receptionist in the industry but it will be hard to land a gig with only 2 days a week and the pay won't be great.

I'm in the industry and I can tell you that most positions - it takes over your whole life and it's long hours.. and sometimes weekends and holidays. Thats the thing with media/entertainment.. it doesnt stop. Its 24/7/365. It's fast-paced and you have to love it and wouldn't trade it for the world and know ahead of time what you're getting into. We're talking being attached to your cell phone. It's one of those industries where your job is your life and everything else can suffer as a result. You have to be very career-minded to do it.

If you're out east, try to contact Dan's Papers. There are a lot of eastern publications in the hamptons that may be looking for part timers or freelance reporters and writers.

What about a marketing company out east by you? Or maybe an event planning company?

If you have any questions, FM me.

I also think olive was talking about the adult entertainment industry Chat Icon

I think the PP gave you some excellent advice.

Also, what about setting up some informational interviews or looking for a mentor?

At least that way you would gain more realistic info and not be flying that blindly.

Maybe you could find a gig out of it that way too.

Agree about mentorships possibly from PP above

What about radio? There are some radio stations on LI. Low pay though.

What is your goal? Are you trying to get foot in door now so when kids get older you can join the workforce?

I agree, the pay is horrendous in radio. You meet a lot of interesting people, but if you're looking to make money eventually, this is not the career for you.

I agree with the ideas the PPs have made.
