Parent Trainer
Anyone have one? What things did you look for when selecting one besides availability? Any advice?

Re: Parent Trainer
We have one. She's been with my daughter for almost 3 years. I actually met her through a friend that used her. She clicked right away with daughter.....works with me and involves my other daughter. Picks activities that she knows will interest my daughter. Works with us as far as schedule goes.

Re: Parent Trainer
We are about to start with our fourth parent trainer. Since we get parent training as part of our services, EI and then the school district assigned one to us, so we didn't really select anyone. We have had good luck so far, so the only reasons we have switched is because he was transitioning (EI to CPSE and then CPSE to CSE) or the trainer got a regular FT job.
Availability is huge for us. I don't know how old your DC is, but once they are school aged, training can only be M-F and no later then some time in the evening. Since DH and I both work FT, we have to have someone who can come on a weeknight. The other thing that you might want to ask for is someone who is a behaviorist. The trainer working with us now is a certified BCBA and I really think she has been great. I would also think about what you want to focus on for parent training. We started out with getting help with improving DS's eating and teaching him life skills. Now, I think we are starting to focus more on taking him out into the community and teaching him the appropriate ways to behave. If you are selecting someone, you might want to ask them what sort of things they generally do with families - examples of things they work on.

Re: Parent Trainer
i have had quite a few but not because we didnt like the ones we had, it's because of how my therapists worked.
our Male parent trainer is awesome. when he left (lapse of license) we got Katie, who was also his ABA therapist (the one WhyTeach has), when she went on maternity leave, we got Angela (who was with my DS since he was 15 months old, then DS aged out and Keith came back, and he's been with since AJ was 18 months old and AJ is now 6
i have LOVED them all
each did different things, and showed us many different ways and gave many ideas how to transition and parent the behavior issues he has.
with the combination of all of them, we found what works
