Getting into HR

Hi all,

I'm currently working in banking and would like to get into the HR field as a HR assistant. The HR asst jobs I've been seeing are usually requiring at least a year's worth of experience. In my current role, I'm more of a supervisor so I have experience dealing with co-workers' issues/questions.
Can anyone offer some advice on building/acquiring skills? I've been utilizing LinkedIn and also putting the word out to my friends and family.

TIA!

Re: Getting into HR

Maybe look into home care agencies.

I don't think the $$$ is that great though, and it tends to be more of a paper pusher/filing kind of role from what I have observed.

If you're able to, maybe look into getting a certificate in HR to add to whatever degree you currently have. You can also work your resume to highlight the skills/experience you have to relate to the kind of positions you are looking for. Even though some places say at least a year of experience, if your resume is a good fit recruiters will often overlook that. The first HR job I had was looking for 2-5 experience. I had none and just related my current experience to what they were looking for and got the job. And as much as I personally hate networking events, you could look into joining SHRM and attending their meetings.

Thank you both for the responses! I actually met with my alumni's career counselor and she suggested a functional resume. It would highlight my experience (supervisory) and allow me to emphasize how my skills relate to the job.
Gdubs, I also dread networking events but they seem necessary. And I will be looking into SHRM.
Thanks again!
