4th grade teachers.. please help me out
I just got a new job in Queens in a great school in a great district. My friend works there and helped me get it. She will be another 4th grade teacher so I can always ask her for help, but don't want to burden her with so many questions. I figure ill leave the questions that pertain to that school to her and ask the more general ones here.
What can you tell me about 1st day activity type things to do with 4th grade?
Do you use reward systems for behavior in 4th grade?

I have no 4th grade advice but I just wanted to say congrats! I'm guessing by your post you landed a job in District 25 or 26, that's wonderful!

Re: 4th grade teachers.. please help me out
On the first day I have them interview another student on a worksheet and present it. Other years I have them complete an all about me sheet and draw a self-portrait to go along with it. It works nicely for a bulletin board for the first month of school. I go over procedures, label books, organize supplies. I start a math lesson the very first day. I usually read "First Day Jitters" and explain that teachers get nervous on the first day of school too. You can have them write a response, collect it, and get a good idea of their writing skills on the first day.
Congratulations!

I have students interview each other to write bio poems. Marble Jar as whole class behavior incentive, Handful of marbles for each whole class compliment, students plan a party when they full the jar. We set up binders. Review some routines Read chrysanthemum ( or any anti bullying book) and then I pass a smiley face around. Each person says something negative to smiley and crumples it. We then apologize and smoothe smiley out. I keep the wrinkled smiley up all year as a reminder of how damaging words can be and remind students to choose their words are fully. Then have the students establish a list if class rules they think will be essential for a successful year.

Re: 4th grade teachers.. please help me out
The first day my co-teacher and I usually have the students fill out an all about me sheet and self-portrait. Like previous poster said, it makes a great first month bulletin board. We also have them walk around and get to know each other. They walk around with a sheet and have to find someone that matches the statement. For example it might say: "I was born in January." They find someone born in January to sign their name next to the statement. Some of the statements might be: "I have a dog, I have more than two siblings, I have been on a plane, etc." You can only have a person sign once. It's fun and gets the kids moving around.
Feel free to FM during the year with any questions. This is only my second year teaching 4th, but I will help anyway I can!
