Newborn clothing gifts

My DD was born 3 wks ago and several people have gifted her summer clothes sized 3-6 mos. She was only 7-13 at birth and is still wearing newborn size. There's no way any of this stuff will fit her before the end of the season, but I feel bad returning all these gifts. I don't want to seem unappreciative, but don't ppl realize that she won't be in 3-6 months until probably November?

return them.

Nothing irks me more than having clothes with tags on them sitting in the closet.

I would rather see the money spent on those clothes returned and exchanged than not used at all.

Some people don't give gift receipts either Chat Icon but for those gifts I took the loss if I couldn't get the amount or I exchanged it for then next years size. I took my chances if I was getting too little money back for it.

But I actually sat in an empty room one day going through everything and putting in piles according to size. Then I went through each pile thinking about seasons. I returned what I didn't like, wrong size/season. I either exchanged or returned and with doing that I basically got dd1's first year of clothes. I barely had to buy anything.

Return them and get fall clothing. There is no reason to feel bad. It's worse just to leave the clothes hanging there than to return to get something more usefull.

I dont know if I replied to the same thread but this is my response on your other topic you posted about this...

you're not being unappreciative... you're being realistic! lol - I had the same problem. I dont think people think when they buy baby clothes (especially if they aren't parents themselves) -- Just hang onto the stuff that doesnt fit her and leave the tags on. If it just so happens she grows out of season for them then take them back to the stores to exchange for something you want that will fit her for that season. Most places like Babies R US, Kohls, etc.. will let you exchange w/o a receipt if you don't have one. I'm sure people would much rather you get something you want for her than not being able to use it at all.. plus... they dont have to know! ha! Chat Icon

return them and get fall clothing. nothing wrong with that. they wanted to get you something and lots of times people are just clueless about sizes and they buy what looks good in front of them.

I agree, return them! I'm always appreciative when someone gives me a gift, bc it's the thought that counts...but part of me gets annoyed when people give me clothes that DD won't be able to wear bc the size/season will be wrong...like, obviously you didn't put THAT much thought into it! I know that sounds super bit**y, but I always think about things like this when gift giving. I guess it's my pet peeve!

Re: Newborn clothing gifts

Sometimes people want to provide you with a variety of sizes but youjust can't tell what you will need. DD never fit in NB and by two months was fitting in 3-6 months stuff... you just never know.

Definitely return them! No one will ever know!

ETA: not sure if you have an iPhone, but download the Red Laser app. It lets you scan the bar code to see where it's sold. If Buy Buy Baby sells it, return it there. It's probably the only store that will give you the full price for the item without the receipt. BRU, Macy's, Kohls, etc. will give you the lowest sale price.

Then you can buy diapers, formula , clothes or whatever else you might need.

Re: Newborn clothing gifts

Return, don't feel bad. They would rather see the clothes to good use. If you can't return them, you can put stockings or leggings and a long sleeved tee under summer rompers.

Re: Newborn clothing gifts

I prob had $200 in merchandise credit from a varierty of stores (BRU, BBB< Carters, gap, gymboree, etc) after I made returns! Dont feel bad - I would rather get use of their "gift" later on then not use at all! I would hope they would feel the same way!

I took a picture of every gift I got so i could write a very detailed thank you of what they gave and I was very sincere in my thank you and wish I could have used it all..but at that early on - lets face it they live in onsies and occasionally dress up! I need more help with the wardrobe in the 3-6-9 month ages groups! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Newborn clothing gifts

Don't feel badly at all. You have to do what is right for your child and I am sure people would rather your DC have season and size appropriate clothing.

Return them! That's crazy that gave you that size in summer clothing. My DD is 3 months old and still not in 3-6 month. The only problem with returning them is you might not get anything for them at this point bc all that stuff is super cheap now!

Re: Newborn clothing gifts

Return them!!! I felt bad at first too but what are you going to do..let them sit in a closet. Babies are expensive and clothes cost money. You might as well have stuff you want. Most ppl wont even know.

Newborn clothing gifts

Thanks, I feel a lot better about it now. The outfits were all so cute, but honestly all she wears right now is onesies and sleep n plays. My SIL has 3 boys so I think she was just excited to shop for a girl. She gave me 8 outfits incl dresses and bubble skirts. All adorable, but what infant is comfortable in a dress when all they do is nurse and sleep all day?!

i returned close to $300 worth of clothing after my shower and right after she was born... unless you have someone you can give it to theres no reason to hold on to it.

Return what you can.

I have tons of clothing for DS in the wrong size for the wrong season that I can't return. I'm just holding onto it for my next baby or for when someone I know has a child who can wear the clothing.
