Do you give a larger wedding gift if you bring the kids?
I had a no kid wedding so I don't even know if young kids count in a headcount for a reception. DH and I always left our kids home for weddings. We are bringing our 2yo and 4yo.
We usually give $500 to good friends and $300 for normal friends/acquaintances.
Should we give more since we are bringing the kids?
I recently gave $1000 to a close family friend but that was a combined gift from my parents and me so covering 4 adult plates.

I know when we got married there was a discounted price for children and your 2yo should be free. I would think if you added an extra $50-$100 to your normal gift range that would cover.
The only wedding we brought my DD to was my SIL and we gave an overly generous gift already.

Re: Do you give a larger wedding gift if you bring the kids?
IDK, but funny story, my DH and I invited everyone's kids (we had a really casual wedding), and we arranged with the caterer to have a separate buffet for the kids-chicken fingers, penne vodka, mac and cheese, etc. We gave our guests the option of lobster, filet, chicken or childrens' buffet, on the invitation (we had to do it in advance because we had a catered backyard wedding and the caterers were bringing live lobsters), and we get one back from a family of 5 who put down 3 lobsters and 2 filets....for their 8, 13, and 15 year olds. Fine, the 15 year old wants an adult entree, but they put down a lobster for their 8 year old, lol.
Like isn't it obvious that we put that because we were assuming the children would eat the children's buffet?

Maybe I will buy a ~$100 gift off their registry and give it to them from the boys and we will give our norm $500.

I think that a gift of $500 from you and your children is more than generous.

Not trying to make it a cover your plate debate but I don't think $500 will cover our plates.

I agree w/the PP. If they can't afford to pay for the wedding, they should have a cheaper one. Paying them to cover your plates shouldn't be a concern. $500 seems plenty generous to me, though if the cost of one person is more than $250, that seems insanely high to me.
But I also think if an 8 year old would rather have lobster than the children's buffet that is ok, too... If you wanted children to only have the buffet, then that should have been stated on the invite.

And, how, in LIF invite etiquette would you suggest I word that on a wedding invite? lol! I can only imagine what people would say if they got a wedding invite that said kids can only order x,y,z. Its just one of those things that people should have figured out. I was more hoping people would see that a children's entree was offered, infer that it was nice that we invited everyone's kids and be someone considerate and order what was obviously intended for the kids. In the end, their 8 year old got a lobster, but we were just like

I do have a friend whose child eats lobster, shrimp, etc. over chicken nuggets, pasta etc.
As for price, I think 500 is pretty generous - especially if you are saying in a pp that you aren't even really going to be there for the reception. I would rather tell the bride/groom that you would be leaving early with the kids than have them pay for a plate that you would not be having anyways.

I would give the monetary amount I would customarily give them and then a registry gift from the kids.

This!! Small children were free and anyone over 5 (I think) were half off. We did not pay full price for kids. We did not invite kids. We only had our nieces and nephews since they were in the wedding.

Just want add venues I've dealt with only consider babies free if they are going to have their own chair at the table and you will be ordering chicken fingers or whatever they will charge for that if your concerned about covering your plate.

No no dear..
There is no need of increasing your budget if you are bringing kids with you for wedding. They are your family and the gift will be from all of you. So, Cost of the gift is not that important. The gift must be something that attracts the groom and bride..

I give a gift based on what I can afford and my relationship to the person who is getting married. That is all. I don't nitpick when it comes to kids or no kids, venue, day of the week, etc.

Something like... Adults: Choose one: Chicken_ Fish_ Lobster_ There will be a buffet available for children 12 years and younger. # of children's buffets_
So even if the 8 y.o. ordered lobster, you are covered, and you could have the server or whoever explain that all children get the buffet. But I think it is a small thing to get so upset over. Then again, I didn't have kids at my wedding.
