New Here - Possible Endo
Hi everyone. I have been reading this board for a few months now and finally decided to take the plunge and post. I have seen that this board will be a great support system and everyone on here is very encouraging toward one another. I was posting on the TTC board for a while and decided to take a break for a few months before my first RE appointment.
I had my appt yesterday with Dr B and found out there is a greater than 90% chance that I have endometriosis based on the ultrasound. He is recommending a laproscopy with Dr Pillitterri. I am completely in shock and am extremely upset probably because I am not completely aware of the implications of this, but all I know is that the Dr said if I do have it, it would definitely hurt my chances of getting pg on my own. I was always told my AF cramps were normal because they only last for a day and the pain is relieved by OTC meds and I really didn't have any other symptoms. Does anyone have any experience with Endo. laproscopy or Dr P or any general info I could use to read up on? The information I see on the Internet has freaked me out. Thank you all in advance.

Re: New Here - Possible Endo
I had endo that was found during an exploratory laparoscopy. I never had heavy painful periods. I had no telltale signs of endo. I did however have lower right sided pain for YEARS. Had every test under the sun and was told it was IBS. Finally found an OBGYN I like and she said we should take a look. Could be endo with adhesions.
We were TTC for about 8 months and nothing. Went back to OB and she said let's go ahead with the surgery. Well, she was right. Endo and adhesions. The surgery wasn't bad at all. I had minimal pain after. Nothing Tylenol couldn't control. And thankfully, about 4 months after surgery, the pain is gone. I did get pregnant with IUI 7 mo after surgery but it was ectopic. Endo can cause scarring on your tubes so they want to look at that and see if they can take it off and see if they are functioning properly.
Good luck!! Don't be scared. It's really not a bad procedure and you'll feel much better after and hopefully you'll get a BFP not too long after!!

Re: New Here - Possible Endo
I have endo and have had 2 laps done. The first was done by my RE at the time. After 2 years of fertility treatments I felt my cramps getting more painful and pain during sex again. The second lap was done by a surgeon who specializes in endo and ovarian oncology. His name is dr. Farr nezhat. I highly recommend him. He works out of Winthrop and st. Luke's in manhattan. I had my lap done at Winthrop. His office in li is part of women's contemporary care. He said that my first lap the endo wasn't completely removed, just cauterized. He cut it all out and the pain hasn't come back yet. That was 3 years ago. I would see him for a consult.

Re: New Here - Possible Endo
I never knew I had endo until I started the testing process with my RE. My periods are a little painful on day one but nothing out of the ordinary that I would've sought medical help for.
After getting the results from my HSG test, you could clearly see that one of my fallopian tubes was coiled around and my RE said that it was due to scar tissue and recommended a laproscopy. (I also had an ectopic preg almost 2 years ago).
We are looking into moving straight to IVF due to MF fertility issues as well, but my RE believes the success rates of IVF are higher with the removal of endo.
I had my surgery almost two weeks ago after finding out the results of all my testing just a week before that. It was a lot to process but I wanted to move forward as soon as possible.
The healing process has been good. I experienced more discomfort after the surgery than pain. I had some bleeding for a few days last week. I'm still taking it easy because I also had a D&C and don't want to push myself too much too soon.
They did find endo during the laproscopy (some scar tissue and a fibroid that wasn't detected during my other tests). I'm very happy I went through with the surgery. Feel free to ask me any other questions.

Careful with allowing them to do surgery on your tubes. I had mine done, due to endo. It damaged the cilia inside the tube so that every time my egg got fertilized (5 times) they just planted at the spot because the cilia was damaged they couldn't push the egg along and down the tube.

Re: New Here - Possible Endo
Thank you all for your responses. Do any of you know what the typical protocol is after laproscopy to give you the best chance? Do you normally go right to IVF?

Depends on several factors if a more aggressive treatment will be recommended by your RE (e.g. age, cause of infertility, etc.). After lap, they say, is the best time to try because it's "clean" in there. I turned out to have Stage 4 endo and after my lap, we could have done IVF. However, we (DH and I) opted to be conservative and try out a couple more rounds of IUI. We went a step up when each treatment option didn't work out, as IVF was our last resort. We did end up doing IVF. My 1st and 2nd were both conceived via IVF. My 3rd was natural conception. Surprise, surprise.
