Re: For Parents: This might be a stupid a question, but why do you cry...
this might sound sad to some...but I find my son more interesting and awesome than many adults I know. So yes, I will miss him and most likely cry when he goes to school and finding "other adult things to do" won't be a consolation to that.
Also, with all these crazy stories about child care providers and teachers who can't be trusted...it's downright SCARY to leave your child in someone elses hands and just pray they do a good enough job. Up until this point I have been raising my son and instilling values in him, but when someone else takes over a huge chunk of time like that I will absolutely worry about if he is in good hands.
it has nothing to do with cutting the cord either. I can be happy to let me child grow and be independent and still miss him and worry.

I do not understand it at all.
I am doing cartwheels when the summer is over.
Having kids is fun but exhausting, school is a break for them and for us, what is there to cry over?
So silly IMO.
Wow, this is really insensitive. It perfectly normal to feel sadness at such a major transition when you have a deep bond with your child. Even more so, when you have stayed home with your child for 5 years.

I get the sadness, I really do. I am just saying that some moms say that they have no clue what they will do without their kids around. I can think of a MILLION things I could do with 7 hours of free time. lol.
I see what you're saying. Trust me, I have an endless list of things I want/have to do, that's not a problem. I will get to it all one I stop feeling so sad this week. I just need time to adjust, I'm sure once I'm in the groove I'll probably enjoy having some extra time in my day being down one kid.

My mom was home with me growing up. She always said that she preferred my company to many adults. We were really best friends and when you have this kind of relationship you feel lots of sadness when you child is gone all day and you are not used to it.

Yeah, you will be fine soon. It is a new routine. I am sure I will be a basket case next year when my youngest goes to middle school. I was more worried for my oldest to go into high school then she was. lol.

Ok, now I want to cry reading all of these. My oldest started Kindergarten 2 weeks ago and my baby is in preschool. I didn't cry that much then but I want to cry now.

I just get why people if they don't agree or do it differently have to use words to describe what they don't do
So u don't cry. That's fine. No need to use a word like silly
Especially when it's on a subject like this
Crying or not crying does my make anyone a better parent.
It doesn't mean u had no life before or havin a life or having our child's life be your whole life is bad or good
Why can't people justdropnthe judgements
I never knew when I became a parent I would have to deal with so many people who think they are so much better bc of the way the parent. That goes for everywhere not just here

Re: For Parents: This might be a stupid a question, but why do you cry...
I cried when my DS got on the bus for pre-k. I cried when he got on the bus for Kindergarten and I cried again last week for first grade.
I cried very hard last year. Not only did DS start Kindergarten, but, my DD started pre-k. Hit me hard.
This year, 2nd year of pre-k, I cried again.
They are my babies. They're growing up way to quickly right before my eyes.
My mom used to say "Hold on tight, because it goes FAST". I'd
I Take back ALL of those and listen to her angel voice ALL the time.
It goes very fast!

Re: For Parents: This might be a stupid a question, but why do you cry...
I'm in the minority in that I've never cried for any of my children heading off to school. (I have one in 2nd, one in K and one in nursery school.)
It's not that I wished them out of my hair or for them to grow up quickly, but they've always been so enthusiastic about going to new places, meeting new people and just being independent overall that I tend to focus more on that. I'm always so amazed that they, unlike me, have no fear or hesitation when it comes to new surroundings and people and I guess knowing that tends to put a smile on my face.

Re: For Parents: This might be a stupid a question, but why do you cry...
Some women are just more sensitive than others about their children growing up. I think the answer is that the day your child is born is the happiest day of your life. With every day that goes on, you move away from that happy day. Moms ( and dads) want their child to be little forever, but that's not reality. So, every life transition can be emotional, but then you get used to it and life goes on.
Also, want to add. I think transitions are a reminder that life is fleeting and nothing lasts forever.

We cry because we spent 10 minutes packing a thoughtful snack of heart-shaped cheddar cheese blocks with his favorite crackers and a love note for morning snack-time and when we pick him up he says he's hungry - he couldn't eat his snack because "a kid at the table said it looked like cannalopes and I don't eat cannalopes, Mom".

That is why we cry - seeing them going out and being influenced by others. We can't be there to protect them or help them. It is out of our hands for those hours they are in school.

Unfortunately that is life and I guess older parents know that is what comes with the territory, as much as we hate it.

ALL parent's know it. But to some it is sad and invokes tears. LOTS about life invokes tears.
SO sad that once again we cannot support each other as mom's and women. But judge each other for some reason to try to make ourselves feel better or superior. That is all that is going on here.
Yes, human's judge each other...and yet some...try to rise above the nonsense and do not.

I don't think it's silly in the least, sorry. I don't think most moms cry every single school year, but it's quite normal to cry when a child starts kindergarten..it's just one of those "moments" I guess. Like when parents cry when their kid leaves for college or at their childs wedding..it's just a bittersweet moment I think. I'm not saying one HAS to cry, I just think it's totally normal...
It's funny because I cry and get overwhelmed for a moment but I DO relish the "me" time I get once school starts, lol. I miss them, but I also like the quiet for a few hours.
No need to apologize.
Who says we all have to agree?
I think it's silly, you don't. That's awesome
nothing to do with agreeing, a lot to do with respecting other mom's and not calling their love for their children 'silly' .
I don't think it's awesome at all, I think its heartless and crass and rude, but we can agree to disagree...that's cool.

I have yet to meet that person that doesn't judge others for something. On LIF, in particular it happens to be for everything. But that is life - not everyone is going to like what we do - an invaluable lesson that needs to be taught to children as they venture into school.
Not everyone will support us regardless of whether we are mothers, women, men etc. I think that it is an unrealistic notion. Yes, we should be kind but I do not think anything was said that was particularly unkind.
For some the first day of school is about heartbreak and sadness. For others (like me) it is about excitement (whether it is for your children or yourself). I don't cry at happy moments - that's just me (not my wedding, birth of my kids etc.). Others do - that is fine. While I can't understand it I don't think they are bad people and I doubt others on here feel that those people are.
